Apparently Spielberg asked Tom Stoppard to write the screenplay for Jaws, but Tom said he couldn’t as he was writing a play for the BBC.

"I'm offering you a fortune to collaborate with me on a Hollywood blockbuster, and you turn me down to write a play for BBC TV?"

"No," Tom said, "BBC Radio."

Watched Kaurismäki’s funny and touching Paris-set story of three struggling artists, inspired by the same source material as Puccini’s opera

This morning's listening pleasure. It's doing a grand job of drowning out my housework duties of hoovering 😁

Unreasonably excited about this Jim's Twenty-One comp out now on Harriett. Their 7" is a long-time fave and I'm thrilled to tell you that there's *more*

Dooneen will be published next June, by Fitzcarraldo Editions here, and New Directions there. And this is the New Directions cover, by Paul Sahre, and I love it.

Loved this London-set existential comedy by Aki Kaurismäki. A brilliant performance by Jean-Pierre Léaud, and the Joe Strummer cameo is a bonus.

The LONG LONG LONG LONG awaited first LP by @jimstwentyone.bsky.social is out today. It is an incredible artifact - one of the top mid-80s indiepop bands captured (at the time) with all their resplendent & wayward brilliance. I'm playing their 'That Means Nothing To You' on #freshingredients now!

Back in the C86 era I was in a band in Brussels called jim’s twenty-one. John Peel played our one EP and said, ‘They don’t sound very Belgian.’ (We didn’t, and we weren’t.)

Today finally sees the release of our debut album, Nadine. @jimstwentyone.bsky.social harrietrecords.bandcamp.com/album/nadine

For Anna Seghers, #BornOnThisDay in 1900, my thoughts on TRANSIT (tr. Margot Bettauer Dembo), the striking novel behind Christian Petzold's film.

A Kafkaesque story of shifting identities in the midst of #WW2, still highly relevant today. #BookSky 💙📚 #BOTD
