Matthew 7:21 (NKJV): Not everyone who says to Me, “Lord, Lord’, shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. In today’s society we have the expression of if you can talk the talk can you walk the walk. There is a vast difference between talking a good game and actually playing a good game. We make it a sport of its own to mock those who trash talk beforehand then lose by a significant margin. The world is merciless in this regard. Jesus is not without mercy. Jesus is giving us a warning up front that our faith has to be fully lived not just talked about. In the passage before today’s verse, Jesus is warning not to follow false prophets. There are those who are going to come that are talking a good game and are overly confident in themselves. They are going to try to lead us to do things their way. Jesus is warning us to remember that there is one true Way. Jesus is reminding us that the Gospel comes first. Jesus is reminding us to seek justice, love mercy, and show agape love to all. Jesus is reminding us that there is a way to live that puts God first in everything. If what we are doing is not centering God in our lives and the lives of others, we need to turn around and change. We need to stop listening to the false prophets and listen to the Holy Spirit speaking into our lives. We need to stop trying to put ourselves at the middle of everything and instead focus on Jesus. Today, may we fully live into the will of God in our lives.

My print of RefuJesus is my favorite of my images of Christ. It depicts the suffering humanity inflicts on humanity. Why are there still wars, displacements, genocides? Why do we insist on continuing to cause such existential suffering on others? Because of a piece of land or what lies beneath it??

Proverbs 2:9 (NKJV): Then you will understand righteousness and justice, equity and every good path. Prior to today’s verse the author is talking about the wisdom that God gives to the people who love the LORD. This wisdom from God will guard and protect us. This wisdom from God will help us understand the world better. When we allow ourselves to be given wisdom by God, we learn what is right and trust. We learn what true justice is. We learn what true equality is. We learn to walk the path that was set for us. God is waiting for us to walk the path laid out by the LORD. God has offered to be with us on the path: to guide us, to strengthen us, to love us. The path that is laid out for us is one that includes the LORD our God. It is a path that is not always easy but is a path that includes the presence of the Living God. Today, may we choose to live in the presence with God and walk with the LORD on the path set for us.

The targeting of Native Americans by ICE is so widespread, tribal governments all over are responding. To protect tribal citizens from ICE raids, tribes are holding events to help citizens get updated IDs and even speeding up the printing and processing times.

This is one of the most important cases that galvanized Black people in the late 40s through the 1950s. Almost every major Black leader had a comment about it. It is also one of the most successful defense committees that was organized in the 20th century. Almost no one knows about it today.

Acts 2:38 (NKJV): Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” I do not know about you, but there have been times in my life that I denied who Jesus was. I did not believe in God, and I certainly did not believe there was such a person as the Holy Spirit. I was self-assured that I was smarter than that and did not need a crutch to get through the days. I was on a journey of being solidly stoic. So, in my quest to center myself as the true authority of my life, I denied that there was any other claim on my life. I denied that there was anything external to me that would be desirable or helpful. The thing is that Jesus will keep His distance when you tell Him to do that, but Jesus never quits on us. Jesus continually comes back into our lives with an offer of community, forgiveness, love and mercy. Jesus continually comes back into our lives with arms open to give joy and peace. Jesus continually comes back into our lives with the offer of redemption. There comes a time in our lives that we need to heed Peter’s words and repent. We need to turn from our selfishness and into the loving arms of Jesus. There is a time when we need to embrace the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. There is a time when we need to fully worship God. May we let today be the beginning of our deepening the love story we have with the Living God.

Mark 10:27 (NKJV): But Jesus looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.” Jesus has just told the disciples that those who trust in riches are not going to get into the Kingdom of Heaven. This catches the disciples off guard. I think the disciples probably viewed riches the way modern day society views it: the more you have, the more you are seen as being blessed by God. We seem to have the ability as humans to prioritize the wrong things. We see the earthly wealth of people and assume God likes them more than us. Jesus is telling us that is not the case. Great wealth is not something that symbolizes God’s love towards us. In fact, great wealth becomes a barrier to our relationship with God. Jesus knew that if start thinking only in terms of the stuff that we have that it will separate us from God. Instead of trusting in God, we will start in the stuff we have accumulated. So, the disciples ask the question of who then can be saved. We all seem to be chasing after more stuff, so how are we ever going to be saved? Trust in God is the answer from Jesus. Trust in Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit. Trust in the Trinity and not in stuff. We may be weak when it comes to resisting the stuff, but the power of the Living God will help us. Strength will be given us through the indwelling Spirit. The agape love of Christ Jesus is guide us. The worship of God will uphold us. Today, may we turn first to the LORD for what we need instead of the stuff we have accumulated.

Psalm 90:2 (NKJV): Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. There are many things that are going to end in our lifetime. Warranties will expire. The money we make will get spent. There are all kinds of things in our lives that are very temporary. There are things that last awhile and eventually go away. One of the few worldly things that you can count on is that things constantly change. Yet there is One that does not change: the LORD our God. The LORD our God is always there for us. The LORD our God was there before we were, the LORD our God is with us all our lives, and the LORD our God is there when we are gone from this world. Before this world there was God. After this world there will still be God. Today, may we find rest and peace in the fact that God is constant and always there with love and mercy for us.

Romans 8:18 (NKJV): For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. The Greek word translated “revealed” means “to take off the cover”. My immediate reaction to this was that if something is going to be uncovered then it already had to be there. If something can be revealed, then that something has to exist before the revelation. That means to me that the glory of God is already in us before we know it is there. That means the agape love of Jesus is already in us before we know it is there. That means the power and strength of the Holy Spirit is already in us before we know it is there. God designed us to be in relationship. God designed us to be part of an eternal Kingdom. God designed us to have the agape love of Jesus working in and through us. Today, may we participate with the work of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit in allowing who we were created to be to come into full view of all.

Ecclesiastes 7:10 (NKJV): Do not say, “Why were the former days better than these?” For you do not inquire wisely concerning this. One of the things I have definitely learned through my years is that things constantly change. January 31, 2026, is not the same as January 31, 2025, nor the same as January 31, 1967. The world is in the process of constant change. One year might be a lean year in income when another year might be the best you ever had. One year you might be strong and healthy when years latter health issues start creeping into your life. Today’s verse is a warning to not compare one time to another. Life happens to us. Some of things that happen are not in our control. The lean income years were not because I worked less or slacked off compared to the boom years. My work ethic never wavered. Economic factors beyond my control happened. Yet, through it all there remained one constant in life, the LORD our God. The LORD has been there always with forgiveness and love. God has shown up through all those times with strength and wisdom. The LORD our God was always there. Now, if I was actually paying attention to that is a different thing. I may have wavered in my relationship with the LORD, but God never wavered. Today, instead of focusing on the shifting sands of life may we center the One who redeemed us and loves us eternally.

Isaiah 26:8 (NKJV): Yes, in the way of Your judgments, O LORD, we have waited for You; the desire of our soul is for Your name and for the remembrance of You. The Hebrew word that is translated “for the remembrance of You” means “memento”. It comes from the word that means “to mark”. There have been many things in my life that I wish I could forget that they happened. Also, there are many things in my life that I wish to celebrate and never forget. There are things that have happened in my life that seemed silly accidents at the time that have become family traditions that are cherished. There are major milestones in life that we fondly remember and rejoice at the memories of them. I can honestly say that none of those great memories have occurred without the presence of the LORD my God. There are times when I have gone back to remember certain moments, and it was only in reflection that I was able to see the presence of the LORD in them. Other times I have been able to recognize the handprint of God while in the moment. In all the times in my life worth remembering, God was there with me. Because of this, the name of God is always remembered and celebrated. Because of this, the LORD is glorified. Because of this, the love of the LORD our God is magnified. Today, may we all find moments of remembrance that allow us to love and worship the LORD our God.

i’m done with your peace— a dove with a muzzle. candles for cameras while the badge reloads and federal boots flood the street. you say violence is complicated as if my body isn’t a footnote in every law. this country learned my name just to erase it, then sent the state to finish the job. treaties break like bones. sirens drown prayer. tear gas blooms where hope should be. order kneels on history’s throat and calls it peace. do not ask me to be patient. patience is how you keep killing us and calling it peace.

1 Peter 1:8-9 (NKJV): …whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith-the salvation of your souls. Peter is writing to people who have not seen Jesus the way Peter saw Jesus, in person. Yet even though they never had personal contact with Jesus, these people still had a love for Him. The same is true of us. None of us where there when Jesus physical walked around. None of us has sat down with Jesus and ate a meal. We have not hugged Jesus nor shaken His hand. I have confessed before that I am an empiricist at heart; I need to see, feel, and smell things to believe in them. It is how I was wired. But there has not been a time in my life that I have been able to see Jesus physically, feel the warmth of His hands, or smelled what He smelled like. So, faith for me has been an interesting journey over these years. Coming to fully believe in One who is not fully experienced empirically has been a challenge. But what is faith if not believe and hope in what is true. My lack of experiences does not make Jesus any less real. My lack of experience does not make agape love any less powerful. My lack of experience does not make the Gospel any less impactful and true. We love because Jesus first loved us. We glorify and worship God because Jesus is. Today, may we all lean fully into glorifying and worshiping Jesus in spirit and truth.

John 14:23 (NKJV): Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.” Jesus has told the disciples that there is going to come a time when the world will no longer see Him, but they will still see Him. Judas asks the question that we would ask “Huh?”. Today’s verse is the response to the question of “how will that work?” I think I sometimes lose sight of the beauty of the idea that Jesus makes a home with us. There have been times in my life that I was wondering around in this world looking for something. I moved to one place and did not find it. I moved to another place looking for it and did not find it. What I found in those times was that I was looking for the wrong things. I thought I was looking for a home when truly what I was looking for was an escape. What I was looking for was to get away from whatever was bothering me. I had developed a habit of running away. Then, God stepped into my life and helped me out. I found an earthly home the day I met my wife. I found a heavenly home the day I said yes to Jesus. When I started to grow in my faith and develop my relationship with Jesus, that was when I realized the earthly home was given to me as a way to find my way to my heavenly home. There are still times when conflict shows up that my original move away reflex kicks in, but my faith has grounded me in my relationships with family and with Jesus. I am eternally home because Jesus made a place for me. Today, may you find the true meaning of being at home with God and Jesus.

Auschwitz was at the end of a process. We must remember that it did not start from gas chambers.

This hatred gradually developed: from ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder.

Auschwitz took time.

Today, we remember all the victims murdered during the Holocaust, and we stand with those who survived.

We also mark the 81st anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.

This dark memory must be passed to future generations.

Never again.

Psalm 18:1-2 (NKJV): I will love You, O LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. The Hebrew word translated “trust” means “to flee for protection”. It can also mean “to confide in”. As David could tell us with full knowledge, the world is a difficult place to live. There are things that are constantly attacking us from inside and out, especially at the microscopic level. Our relationships with other people ebb and flow. Some relationships are good; some relationships are toxic. There is the daily pursuit of sustenance. There are days where shelter in a warm place is essential to survival. The world can just be plain hostile to us. Yet there is One who is always there for us without hostility and without toxicity. The LORD our God is there each day for us in way that is more dependable than we can comprehend. The LORD is there for us to run to when we need strength. The LORD is there for us to run to when we need shelter. The LORD is there for us to run to when we need love. Our God is always there to listen to us. There is no time that we cannot pour out our concerns and fears to the LORD that God is not going to draw us near. When all around us has become chaos, the LORD our God is dependable and true. When all around us have deserted us, the LORD our God stands next to us. When all around us is sinking sand, the LORD our God is a sure foothold. Today, may we find deliverance and strength in the One who redeemed us and loves us eternally.

John 13:16 (NKJV): Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. Jesus has just finished washing the feet of the disciples. Jesus has completely caught the disciples off guard. In their society and in ours, the powerful did not do menial things for those they had power over. If you had power and wealth, you had people who washed your feet for you. Jesus has flipped this expectation on its head. Jesus did not command another to do the foot washing; Jesus did the foot washing Himself. Jesus does not farm out the work of agape love to others; Jesus lives a life that is steeped in agape love. Jesus is by His very nature agape love. Today’s verse is an invitation to us from Jesus. It is an invitation to live a life that is based on serving others. It is an invitation to live a life that is based on agape love. It is a life that is based on putting others’ needs as important. We are called each day to be of service to those around us, especially those that we have some semblance of power over. We are called to serve those that we think should be serving us. We are called to love those who we think should be showing us love. We are called to live a life that reflects who Jesus truly is. Today, may we live into the agape love that Jesus has given us so freely.
