my name is Scotty and I've spent 20 years in love with the Power Pop genre. I'm going to post a #dailyFavoritePowerPopSong just to see how long i can go without running out.

Day 1: seems appropriate to start with the Paley Bros, since we lost Andy Paley this week.

PREDATOR: BADLANDS -- teeters close to the edge of becoming a kid-safe "The Predator & Grogu" but balances it just enough to produce an exquisite (and surprisingly funny) experience.

The price we pay for jt is a near-total CGI Predator design. I understand the constraints, but it doesn't look real.

Here's my review of DIG! XX, a documentary I remember loving in 2006, now in an expanded and updated version that I also absolutely love, albeit for entirely different reasons. 1/n

If You’re Stuck At An Airport Right Now, It’s Because Trump Fucked You | Defector
You picked a bad weekend to fly. Over 1,500 flights in the US were cancelled yesterday, and over 1,200 over them have already been cancelled this morning. One of those may have been yours. You’re stuc...

The infamous "flower pot" recording used in GET BACK was actually between Paul, John, Ringo, Yoko, and Linda. John and Paul are almost completely incoherent, even with 75 percent of it transcribed, but it really sounds to me like John wanted the Beatles to become something akin to the Wu Tang Clan.

Sad to say but needs to be said: I graduated with a BS in journalism and immediately bailed on a career in it 20 years ago because of precisely this paragraph.

and get a hobby that's not a side hustle

do it because you fucking love it
Specifically, get a hobby in which you MAKE something, and then find places for other people who share that hobby

Making things is good for you on, like, a spiritual level, so you're already improving your outlook, and you have a healthy foundation on which to build new relationships

in the pre-internet days, if you wanted to complain b/c an episode of the Simpsons had Martin saying "deploy, damn you, deploy!", you'd have to send your two-page missive to the short-lived companion magazine SIMPSONS ILLUSTRATED to be told by the editors "we'll pass your little suggestion along"

the story here is that an unnamed genius figured out that venues that offer Assisted Listening Devices at shows basically give direct access to the house soundboard mix via wifi, but it unfortunately depends on the venue's internet bandwidth. So a bunch of tapers recorded the same shows & muxed them
Surprise! The first Bob Dylan soundboards in 16 years. The Outlaw Tour has never sounded better.

sadly, the answer is: nothing. This is him, freed from a chrysalis that was always going to shatter at some point.

Years ago, he was quoted in a This American Life episode where he fantasized about murdering a french exchange student from his youth who was mean to him
Coren has correctly clocked that the only viable response at this point to Graham Linehan, and to people like him, is “What the hell happened to you, man?”
Victoria's response to kamikazi transphobe Linehan reminds us that angry men are happy to harass women in the name of (checks notes) women's rights and that if a trans woman appearing on tv sends them ballistic then this is not about women's rights, it's about the eradication of the trans community

it's a bit heartbreaking to see that it took me until my mid-30s to find something that I was not only good at but enjoyed doing (coding) and by my early 40s, all of that joy has been sucked out (by AI enshittification)
