Strong moment during PMQs.

"Anyone who defends platforms linked to sexual exploitation of children forfeits any right to give lectures about protecting women and girls."

I am certain Alex Wikham, Steven Swinford, at al, who love to report HOURLY on gilt rates whenever they nudge up, explaining how it reduces headroom, are ALL OVER this good news.

<has a look>

Oh.
Ten year gilt yields are at their lowest for about a year. 🥳

Starmer calls X's AI chatbot Grok "disgusting" and "shameful", adding that he has been informed by X that it is acting and complying with UK law.

Reform public schoolboys think it’s all a big joke!

Amazingly, Zahawi only got round to deleting the below after the press conference announcing his defection to Reform.

A Reform government will be very, very unpopular within weeks of taking office. Will make Starmer look like a rock star in comparison. But it will be too late then. They will have the power and the damage will be done. Nothing is more important than stopping them at the next GE.
It is an oncoming catastrophe:
No ECHR
Mass deportations
Net zero abandoned
Free speech in universities abolished
No broadcast impartiality laws
The BBC sold off
Death penalty reintroduced
Cold war with the EU
End of judicial independence
All this - and more - is being very clearly signalled.
This is exactly right and applies to climate as well as immigration policy. There’s a real chance the next UK government could deny climate science, repeal the Climate Change Act, quit the Paris Agreement, axe all clean energy and efficiency policies, and deliver coal mining and fracking projects.

my theory: social media has whipped up impatience, scorn, hatred, anger, polarisation and frustration with anything other than immediate results
Glad the FT is asking the question. Even if I’m not convinced they found a compelling answer.
I get that Starmer & Reeves are unpopular, I really don’t understand the extent of the dislike.

Allies concede the prime minister and chancellor have made mistakes yet the level of disdain towards them is still striking

Honestly I think it’s even worse in the UK with London (though weirdly *only* London) than it is in America with coastal cities.
Do other countries have this weird notion that you’re not a “real” representative of the nation if you live in an urban center? Like do the French say Parisians aren’t really French? Are you considered not a real German if you live in Berlin? Or is this mainly a weird American thing?

I find it incredible this got past the editorial stage. Or is the @dailymail.co.uk Daily Mail now so confident it won't receive any pushback for anything that it feels it can now do whatever it wants?
No idea who Laurent Brindeau is, but isn’t this caricature of @zackpolanski.bsky.social in today’s @dailymailpolitics.bsky.social ragingly antisemitic?

Wait, all the people who said it was outrageous that a British riot-supporter was jailed for a tweet are now saying it's outrageous that a British person was released from an Egyptian prison, given his tweets?

It drives me to distraction that some of my co-religionists keep forgetting that the far right always come for the Jews in the end. Especially as it's literally happening right now in the US.

The Conservative Party is simultaneously arguing people shouldn’t be jailed for social media posts directly calling for violence, but also that people’s citizenship should be revoked over social media posts they don’t like.

Make it make sense.

Having had a day to think through everything about El-Fattah, here's where I stand. Yes, it's possible to believe all of these things at once! In fact, it really shouldn't be that hard.

Ask this question and its follow-up. Like Begum before him, Alaa el-Fattah is being used as a crowbar to shift reasonable people - even some progressives - into a space of thinking that full citizenship, if granted recently or dual, is retroactively conditional or attracts a lower class of rights.

Exactly this. The insanity of banging on about free speech half the time, and bleating "Look at this tweet! Deport him!" the other half, is never pointed out - and never EVER challenged, in softball interviews intended to elicit maximum heat and minimum light.

It is utterly exhausting.
We need a Ken Clarke type figure to tell people to stop being so ridiculous, if we stripped citizenship every time somebody said appalling things, we’d be expelling an awfully large number of people

I already agree with this in principle - citizenship is an untouchable status or it is nothing - but also for reasons of prudence. “The Home Sec can revoke citizenship when he/she deems someone’s online output sufficiently offensive” is a v dangerous precedent to set with Reform leading all polls.

There should be literally no circumstances, ever, where citizenship is can be revoked. If you literally sign up to fight for an opposing army in a war, then we should prosecute you for treason not revoke citizenship

Shamima Begum was the beginning of something in so many ways, one of which was 'the last government's inability to just do its job properly (in this case by passing legislation that would have allowed it to prosecute her here at home) and instead going 'no option but to undermine all our rights'.

I know it’s a low bar & I have a pretty terrible memory but I cannot remember any leader coming out with such racist, ignorant comments?

It doesn’t even register with the mainstream media. Twenty yrs ago, Badenoch would’ve be thrown out of the Tory party. These days they make them leader.

Even by my low expectations for Kemi Badenoch ‘violence against women and girls is something done by immigrants and nobody else’ has shocked me.
Dog-whistle and factually incorrect. Ladies, raise your hand if you were sexually assaulted by a boy at school? I’d wager this or a family member is most women’s first experience of sexual violence
