Changing my name for now as I’m applying for jobs so need to keep a low online profile.

She’s running

Then again, isn’t that the threshold for ‘automatic’ deportation?

Deporting pro-Palestinian protesters who haven’t broken any laws while criticising our restrictions on protests outside abortion clinics.

Uninsured? I knew about MOT and tax but not about insurance.

Or a quarter pint. Or one and a half cigarettes. Don’t quote me on the latter. I quit over 20 years ago so had to look up the price on Google.

Of course, last doesn’t necessarily mean final

I suspect I would have been accused of ghosting by lots of people as I probably would have lost the scrap of paper I wrote their number on.

A couple of things made it slightly easier.

1. If it was local or you knew the area code, you typically only had to remember 5/6 digits unlike the 11 that a mobile number is
2. If you called it frequently l, having to dial or key in the number helped reinforce it in your memory.

Just realised that if you took the argument about working and paying taxes to its logical conclusion you’d disenfranchise unemployed people, stay at home parents and pensioners

Such as visitors/non-citizens pay taxes. As do minors, eg VAT, and potentially inheritance tax. I still think lowering it seems against the tide of emotional maturity being something that is happening at a later age

I think a lot of European countries with ID cards technically require non-citizens/residents to have some form of ID. Maybe a photo driving licence would suffice? But as you say it’s not really enforced and carrying your passport with you seems like too much of a risk of it getting lost or stolen.

Given how probationary periods are typically six months, two years does seem rather in excess of what an employer would need in order to know if things are working out or not.

Something that people thinking of visiting America might want to bear in mind. Bit of a pain to have to carry your passport with you and risk it getting lost or stolen though.

"Under federal law, registered foreign nationals must carry proof of registration with them at all times. But prior to a second Trump administration, it was rarely enforced." www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/...

Be interested to know how many more overseas students they have whose parents aren’t voters so the schools made themselves politically less relevant.

I prefer not ti carry my passport at all times if m visiting. Too much chance of it getting lost.

Yes the Tories civil war over Europe wouldn’t have gone away. Unless Cameron took advantage of the opportunity to purge them which seems unlikely. But demographic churn would probably have worked against any future Leave campaign.

I don’t think it would have happened as soon as that and other geopolitical events (Ukraine) would have made it seem rather more unwise

I can just see JRM saying that a close vote to Remain was not an overwhelming endorsement
ng1978.bsky.social
I think that may be right. I suspect there would have been a ‘one more heave’ mentality. I remember a leading article in the Spectator when it looked like Leave would lose saying battle to take UK out would go on

As well as delayed speech and appearing not to ‘understand’ what was being said to me

I came across this letter from a paediatrician from a time in my life tgat I don’t really remember that commented on how noticeable my echolalia was 🤔

And of course there is an argument that austerity itself played a role in the vote to leave. Once again, usual difficulties with counterfactuals.
ng1978.bsky.social
What do you think the counterfactual would be if we’d stayed in the EU? And yes I know these hypotheticals are inherently difficult so not a trick question!
