People nearby who seem sick might cause the autonomic brain to elicit a protective immune response - good to know for all those times I'm around unmasked people who sneeze or cough or blow their noses (scary!)
The brain detects when a potential source of infection enters the immediate surroundings and prepares the body’s immune defenses, says @natneuro.nature.com paper. This may occur even before physical contact is made, in a VR environment: spklr.io/63329BMpq3

TIL that "discombooberate" is a word (an alternative slang for "discombobulate"), and I think it's a moral imperative that I find a way to use in my WIP.

Highly recommend these great books, one an inventive space opera and the other more of a travelogue of Earth!
US Kindle readers: The Alloy Era duology (Meru + Loka) is on sale for the month of October. Get both for less than $5 and enjoy some “woke as woke can be” #spaceopera and far future #sciencefiction.

(Yes, that is an actual review that someone left for MERU, and it still brings me great joy. 😂)

So glad to see this work going on! I've always felt that prioritizing humans over other species, while an understandable instinct, is fundamentally unjust. We need to find better ways to make progress in biology and medicine.
