crazy to say but having seen a few friend's games get absolutely binned by their publishers this year I think that given the option, descoping until you can self publish would actually be the less risky decision at this point

i feel like this is actually a long-term net positive for small indies making highly bespoke work. people are already sick of the scale-chasing in big games that are made with conventional tools, which is by definition the best result that AI tools _could_ accomplish
Putting aside issues of quality and plagiarism--

One of the things players want in their narrative is novelty - unique, memorable and compelling characters and situations - and AI is pretty terrible at creating novelty without being extremely nonsensical and weird.

Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney believes small teams will soon be able to use AI prompts to make video games on the scale of Nintendo masterpiece The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

geez, nightreign is so good. no notes. most fun i've had in a multiplayer game in a long time. i actually really dig the pacing, kind of reminds me of a platinum game in a lot of ways. i wonder if any ex-platinum people worked on it

it's wild how you can make a game that looks 50% better but performs orders of magnitude worse and has 10x the content bugs than the original, call it a remaster, and people will praise it

yep. gotta get the stuff on screen! the best code is the most rewritable code
revising a confluence doc or paper map for weeks before touching the engine is not iteration. refactoring a system when you better understand its needs is not wasted work. you're measuring 10 times and cutting none. gamedev is ITERATIVE. fucking get STARTED as soon as possible and update it in-place

I've now published my blog post, "I want a good parallel computer." raphlinus.github.io/gpu/2025/03/... . Thanks much to all the feedback on the draft, I'd like to think I've clarified some things that might have been confusing.
I want a good parallel computer
The GPU in your computer is about 10 to 100 times more powerful than the CPU, depending on workload. For real-time graphics rendering and machine learning, you are enjoying that power, and doing those...

The last demo that I tried this Steam Next Fest that I loved (and of course took shots from) was Wheel World, made by @messhof.bsky.social and published by @annapurna.com. The art direction and character work are beautiful. Go play it!

For what it’s worth, all of the most important/meaningful connections I’ve made at GDC have happened without alcohol around
Every GDC is someone's first. After every GDC, we hear about mistreatment, assaults, and other horror stories.

Conference vets, share your tips for a #safeGDC!

I'll start: do NOT. under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. take meetings in someone's hotel room.

Publisher bizdev people at events like GDC and Dice trying to sign "the next balatro" should realize that, statistically, the developer of "the next Balatro" you need to be talking to isn't at GDC or Dice talking to bizdev guys seeking 2m+ in funding

AI images have an extremely distinctive and very strange distribution of spatial frequencies. They're basically made of zebra stripes at varying scales. Every dark band has a corresponding bright band of the same thickness immediately alongside it

this is actually MORE noticeable at thumbnail size
Can someone explain to me why I'm able to tell these images are AI even before I find huge errors (extra fingers, distortions, etc)? Like what are the aesthetic qualities that out these as creations of AI?
