Exploring the Windows 3D maze screensaver you find a smiley face lurking from behind the corner. The face is very big. It looks menacing. In a room with monitors piled on a trashcan. There are papers surrounding the dumpster, and bags of trash in the corner. Someone cleared out in a hurry. Entering the classic 3D maze screensaver. There are rats up ahead. You must collect them. Turning a corner to find old CRT monitors piled against the wall. Mice are dangling from the ceiling. The "Start" icon is in the corner.

Friends if you work at a creative tech/games/etc company in and around London, and you'd be willing to hire some internship/placement students for 2-3 months over summer, please let me know! I have incredibly smart and engaged undergrads looking for summer opportunities.

Sam Altman has said any workers who are displaced by OpenAI will be given free transportation to the nearest culling facility where they will be summarily slaughtered and converted into a nutritious paste meant to be consumed by busy tech executives who don’t have time for regular meals.
Sam Altman explains Open AIs vision for a world where no one goes hungry because all the displaced workers will be converted into essential nutrients for other tech executives.

congratulations!! 🥳🎉✨

this is probably how word of mouth folktales started. basic job trials & tribulations that over time became more and more exaggerated until they became cautionary horror 😆

omg 🥲 someday i hope someone makes a book of compiled short IT stories and publishes it as horror because i think it would be a huge hit. it would appeal to people that don’t know and are horrified, but be cathartic and relatable to people in that field.

It's called a horror story but could just be called "any Tuesday" because nothing in here is surprising or shocking when you've been in IT and had to deal with vendors*.

*not all vendors. Just some. They know who they are.

“Because when a company that claims to “support open source” behaves like that, we all lose.
…And that’s the real horror of the story - not the software, but what people do with it.”

thank you! that would be helpful. i have a rough outline of what i want to show, with the aim of guiding everyone to building something, also games to play as "homework"...
but having something to compare this all to would help.
thank you!!

By changing only a single byte in the code of Mario Paint, the music composer will not stop at the end of the song and instead continue to play the entire contents of the console's memory as music.

soon i’ll also be starting teaching game design for a semester at a university here. i’m both excited and worried about doing a good job. i never officially taught before so now i’ll finally experience how that’s like 😌

yay it looks like tomorrow i’ll be able to announce some amazing news i’ve been sitting on for a while 🥳🍀✨

this last one is a really interesting example. highlights how other mediums have similar concerns with balancing how story is told.
i do agree, it largely depends, especially on the type of game.
alienmelon.bsky.social
with pattern i mean like the established mode of playing it, the habbit of existing in it, just all that familiarity... then you'd let it break and get strange again with that surrounding infinity... imo.
alienmelon.bsky.social
yes, it's really interesting! imo out of bounds is also about familiarity becoming unfamiliar (like how RDR2's has animals that just stare and don't run away, the way it "breaks" while still functioning)... so you'd have to establish the game's "pattern" first before breaking it apart into infinity.
alienmelon.bsky.social
this idea is poetry 😭🥲
how beautiful that would be!
out of bounds exploration is everything special about video games.

allowing exploration is always more compelling than when a player feels guided.

Happy soon birthday!

I'm terrible at picking favs, but I do have this itch list of recommended creepy games that don't have big jump scares, I've been adding to it for years.
