Okay, I finished Basic in D&D B/X.

Came out of it waaaaay more negative that I was expecting, but I'm still mulling it over.

I'll post my notes over on my tumblr in the next few days.

On to Expert.

The main enemy in b/x seems to be doors. So much ink spilled over it.

I'm going to revise my previous position: those new designs do nothing for me. Nothing to worry about there.
I'm not going to care about overwatch again, no matter how hot they make the characters

I hate having to have one

I think this will be the core of my micro OSR I make for February.
Weight being measured in coins and all coins weighing the same really reinforces my belief that early DND images gold as a kind of naturally growing... Thing.

Part fungus, part mineral

A negotiation game that doesn't work on consensus, but rather a hard vote system.

this is also the biggest challenge on the indie publisher side. it's why i've repeatedly emphasized to people that the most expensive part of mothership.blog is paying lawyers as well as for legal liability insurance to protect our future reporting
i really don't think people understand that it is nearly impossible to be a freelance journalist given the money, tools, and manpower reporting the news requires. Freelance critic/writer/op-ed person? Sure. Journalist? There are very, VERY few out there.
A lot of people cannot just start a paid newsletter or become freelancers to sustain their careers. The sports, metro, and international desks did work that requires *team* resources, like legal checks, documents, access to archives, and long-term beat experience.

I only got through the Spells section of basic last night unfortunately.

More or less what I'd expect from spells. Not a lot of damaging stuff yet.

In today's episode of Side Story we look at Locomoto and Easy Delivery Co., two games about animals driving vehicles from place to place and doing jobs. We also really get into it vis-à-vis The Train sidestory.show/20-being-a-d...

I'm in the middle of a big research project at the moment that has some time crunch, but I'm going to eek out some time to follow along and also read The Rule Book.
The latest Missive is HERE! I discuss my unhappiness with the state of #TTRPG reviews/critique, drop a relic-laden Cairn freebie, dive into some ZiMo campaigns and recent blog posts, and more cool stuff. Give it a read and grab the freebie NOW: meatcastle.substack.com/p/talking-ab...

I'm a broken record on this; the hobby space doesn't have the jargon needed to even start to think about the experience they have had.

Let alone communicate the ideas.

I'm still thinking about the Incal.

The farce of it mostly didn't work for me, but it was funny at times.

The vaguely gnostic metaphysics ended up falling completely flat for me. I was really expecting more depth to it, but it felt mostly like a punchline.
February 3, 2026 at 5:30 PM
Finally got around to reading the Incal.

The art is obviously good, though not my favorite moebius mode.

The writing is.... Honestly mostly pretty bad minute to minute. I don't revile the overall plot, but the specifics of it fell flat.

Okay, I've successfully collected a fairly large OSR reading list.

Now I need some games that people consider NSR!

This Adam Neely video makes some of the best arguments I see for why creatives should rebuke AI as part of the process: that it's asking us to make art lonelier, that 'efficiency' is deliberately anti-craft, and MANY OF ITS KEY STAKEHOLDERS ARE LITERAL FASCISTS??
