I've been thinking a lot about how the US has three founding and how, after Trump, we will — for good or ill — experience a Fourth Founding. I've been thinking about what ideas should be included in a Fourth Founding for the US.
yes, Rawls was very much not around for the Founding.

But the First Founding (Constitution), Second Founding (Reconstruction Amendments), and Third Founding (Civil Rights Act et seq), were all built on Rawls' ideas, that equality of opportunity, law, and rights is the core American goal.

I don’t ever want to hear any Republican anywhere ever complain about someone instigating political violence against them ever again. They are a political violence party. They just object to splashback onto themselves of the environment of political violence they’ve created.
Important: House Dem leaders just said Trump's call for execution of Dems has prompted them to contact US Capitol Police and House Sergeant at Arms to "ensure the safety of these members and their families."

Treat Trump like an unhinged menace. He's weak and in deep political trouble. Don't let up.

Five corporations control 90% of the US media market.

Airlines merged from 12 major carriers in 1980 to 4 today.

Four giants control 80% of meat processing.

A handful of companies control the pharmaceutical industry.

The evidence of corporate concentration is everywhere.

I think this video from @iamdannylime.bsky.social is spot on and is why we can't go back to the status quo ante after Trump is gone. MAGA is doing everything it can before it loses power to destroy the future of anyone in America who isn't rich or white. www.tiktok.com/@dannylime/v...

imo this is the frame that makes sense for understanding why, 3 years before a primary, there are ALREADY people yelling at you about supporting newsom. it’s not about supporting the eventual nominee. it’s about establishing right here and right now that the party won’t be an opposition to fascism
they’re just using the threat of fascism to bludgeon you into accepting their limp dicked non-opposition and protection of the status quo

I think the debate over what people "want" is a distraction given two basic facts:
1) America vastly over-provides suburbs and under-provides dense walkability;
2) Suburbs are hideously bad for the environment and harmful to numerous markers of well-being.

That's enough! We should do more density!
as will notes, people tend to *say* they want suburban living. they want a big house and a big yard and etc. this is not however what is suggested by their actual purchasing practices, which invariably result in something like this:

Parties must have core values, like ensuring everyone’s basic needs are met.

THEN you listen to voters about their needs to bring that about.

THEN you PERSUADE voters your plan meets EVERYONE’S needs.

If you only do what voters say, then you stand for nothing, & you’ll lose every election.
I think people are learning the wrong lesson from Elliott's post. My peace plan: everyone stops arguing over labels and instead runs surveys (like this one) with OPEN ENDED responses and we listen to what voters actually say.

And then we act on those feelings to win more elections :)
we can probably agree on the following interpretation

parties can increase their probability of winning future elections not only (or even primarily) by moving to the coherent center on ideological issues, but by moving down the axis of ideology-materialism and focusing attention on affordability

Trump is the clearest possible example of the importance of Article 1 and legislative supremacy and the dangers of both an imperial presidency and a dysfunctional Congress.

Just a very fundamental point:

People use quantitative data in order to debunk qualitative impressions.

But when the data we are discussing is putative welfare measures (e.g. real income or wealth, GDP per capita, etc), the *qualitative* measures are foundational, the quantitative mere proxies. 1/
