Hi, I spent 10+ years researching all sorts of PC RPGs: AAAs, indies, RPG Maker, non-English, etc. Together with 167 volunteers, I created/edited The CRPG Book: crpgbook.wordpress.com

You can download it for free, or buy a hardcover edition from Bitmap Books - ALL author's revenue goes to charity!❤️
The CRPG Book Project
The CRPG Book Project is a collaborative, non-profit effort to create an ebook on the history of Computer Role-Playing Games.

one of my favorite "SOCIETY" things is this 2018 cover of the news magazine The Atlantic, written by mealy-mouthed bigot Jesse Singal, where a moral panic about us transgender people is front and center, and in TINY little print in the top right, "We're Not Prepared for the Next Pandemic"

It‘s also used in Dutch specifically for Indonesian grocery stores, and it is used in Papiamento and languages of Suriname - a truly global word!
Another word for store in Tetum is ‘loja,’ from Portuguese.

A frequent word in Southeast Asian languages - from Malay to Tetum - is 'toko' ('store'). Is this from Japanese toko(ro) 所 ('place')? Nah. Rather, it's from Hokkien thó͘-khò͘ 土庫 ('warehouse'), as in the famous Toko Lay 黎土庫 in Dili, Timor-Leste. 😀

In 2016 it was acceptable to think that Trump’s people were clever instead of making things up as they went along, but we lived through four years of what they looked like in power and we can say confidently that there’s no grand plan here. Stop acting like there is.
The Trump team is a clown car, but they rolled these nominations out cleverly: Drop that Hegseth bomb, then freak people out with Gabbard, then obliterate the information landscape with the Gaetz nomination.
Caffeinated from a late night drive and freaked out by *how* bad the coverage of Trump Sec Def Pete Hegseth is, I decided to start reading his new book, The War on Warriors. A thread. The new Pentagon chief begins by bragging he was pushed out for being an "extremist"... 1/

On the daily doomscroll and skimmed an ad to help you "become fluent in dialects" and thought it said "become fluent in dialectics." So that's where my head is at this morning.

Though that old apocryphal curse might be "may you live in interesting times" we unfortunately cannot even stake a claim to being so lucky, for we merely live in exceptionally and fundamentally stupid times.

Happy 128th birthday, dear Roman! 🥳
