Okay, if the NYT is finally landing on this all-too-obviously framing, let’s be cautiously optimistic that Trump is a lame duck at this point. 🤞
Credit where it’s due. But I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this new framing comes out after a Democratic wave election, the ascendance (and surprisingly broad acceptance) of Mamdani, and his steadily crashing poll numbers.

I really should think about how different courses I teach in a given term interact in my own head despite not sharing any students between them. So, having, on the same “Come and See” in my Soviet film class and Lamed Shapiro’s “White Challah” in my Yiddish lit class, is just too much.

As young Jews move away from Israel, Jewish leaders are reluctant to change their approach
Widespread recognition of a generational split on Israel clashed with an unapologetic tone of support for the country at the JFNA conference.

Nu, at about 10:30 pm today I declined another drink opportunity offered by some younger colleagues (it would have requiered a 15-min walk from the conference hotel), and got called a little old man (“starichok”) in return. At 44 years of age, I have arrived! @aseees.bsky.social #aseees2025

Off to @aseees.bsky.social. I’ll carry my advance copy of “In the Shadow of the Holocaust: Short Fiction by Jewish Writers from the Soviet Union” in my tote; co-translator Harriet Murav will also! Do stop one of us to take a look! It’s already on at least a couple of syllabi in winter/spring 2026.

Omar El-Akkad won the non-fiction category for the National Book Award for “One Day, Everyone Will Always Have Been Against This,” a phenomenal book about the genocide in Gaza. When one day everyone will claim that they’ve always been against this, don’t let the supporters forget that they were not.

one thing about this is that in the wake of all of this kirk is basically forgotten. he was barely cold in the ground before his allies — before his *wife* — started scheming over what they could take for themselves. a real life parable.
New: Reuters has tallied job losses, suspensions and investigations stemming from the reaction to Charlie Kirk's Sept. 10 assassination. Its findings: More than 600 Americans have been punished, and the figure is likely to be an under-count.

So, was Dershowitz Trump’s lawyer in the impeachment trial in the Senate, etc., because of the Epstein connection they share / Trump might have promised to help bury? No wonder the pierogi vendor wouldn’t sell to him.

Pretty much.

A first-of-its kind collection of short stories that provides an underappreciated perspective on the Holocaust, as it was experienced and remembered in the former Soviet Union.

Reminds me of an old Jewish joke wherein a man with ten children & wife all living in a tiny room comes to the rabbi for advice. Rabbi advises him to get a goat, keep it indoors. Things get worse with the goat. The man returns to ask rabbi for help, rabbi advises to remove the goat. Things improve.

Hey Megyn Kelly,

14-year-old Eloise would like a word:

“If my voice makes you uncomfortable, good…
because the minute adults start defending predators by defending the age of a child, you’re not protecting the truth, you’re protecting the predator.”

Sound up! 🔥🔊

The enemy of your enemy is not always your friend. MTG’s beef with Trump is over his betrayal of the “America First” movement and that he is, contrary to what she had believed, part of the “global elite.” She is a dyed-in-the-wool antisemite; what’s coming after Trump on the GOP side is very scary.

Also, the huge Star of David that Batya Ungar-Sargon is wearing here while nodding along to “raping 15-year-old girls is not pedophilia” is *not* good for the Jews. I know it’s not the main issue here but it’s terrifying. Jewish right-wingers like Batya have walked U.S. Jews into mortal danger.
Anybody else had on their bingo card Batya Ungar-Sargon as helping MAGA classify 15-year-olds as not children to claim that pedophilia isn’t really pedophilia? I’m not surprised. Congrats to the 92nd St Y for including her on a panel the other week!

As I argue in Ch. 6 of my new book, one of the more strenuous acts of worldmaking undertaken in Yiddish children’s literature was to imagine a world in which it was safe for girls (including adolescents) to wander and adventure. Century-old fiction offers what the real world still can’t.
