The Treasury backed off imposing a new cap on transactions under the Cycle to Work scheme, something they'd previously told @pickardje.bsky.social they planned to do. Here's our story about cycle retailers' relief at being spared: www.ft.com/content/91cc...

I'm very proud that many years ago I was session clerk of the Budapest Scots Mission, where Jane Haining stayed defending the girls in her care until arrested by the Gestapo. She showed extraordinary bravery, returning to Hungary from furlough after the outbreak of war.
A brass "Stolperstein" or "stumbling stone" memorial commemorating the life and sacrifice of Nazi Holocaust victim Jane Haining was installed yesterday outside St Stephen's Church in Edinburgh.

The BBC reports on the unveiling and her family's reaction here 👇

Here’s what is really bad about the Guardian’s conflation of Kenneth Clarke MP and Kenneth Clark the art historian. The piece says that Civilisation first aired in 1969. Somewhere, someone should have thought, “Hang on - can someone who was in the Commons until recently have been behind that?”

Tbh Kenneth Clarke’s civilisation would be about jazz, whisky, hush puppies and 20 B&H so can we really blame the guardian for getting it wrong?

Martin Wolf on our essay. "So, what do I hope for from Wednesday’s Budget? Some sight of a workable and coherent long-term economic strategy. I do not expect it. It may already be too late. But, without that, it is hard to be optimistic about the UK’s future."

During the blizzard of briefings and leaks in the run-up to every budget these days, I feel retroactive sympathy for Hugh Dalton, who had to resign for saying the following on his way into the chamber to deliver his Budget:

Twitter accounts are based in Russia. BlueSky accounts are based in homes with, frankly, too many books, plants, obsolete cables, and pieces of rustic pottery, that could do with a bit of a tidying up, to be honest.

This is not a peace plan. It is a proposal that weakens Ukraine and divides America from Europe, preparing the way for a larger war in the future. In the meantime, it benefits unnamed Russian and American investors, at the expense of everyone else.
