I have been trying to raise awareness about the recent cuts to pandemic preparedness by provincial institutions in BC for the past 1½ months. Most of the cuts were not announced to the public beforehand and media coverage has been scant. 1/?

Public healthcare is not going to survive without public oversight.

There's no reason for it. Just that the public that benefits from it isn't allowed to see what goes on under the hood. We're prevented from looking out for our own interests by people who insist they're entitled to do it for us.
Canada’s doctor shortage is no accident
It was policy.

Hey folks, this isn't me! I don't have an active public Facebook page right now (though this is making me think I need one).

They're taking my work and photos.

I've tried reporting it, but it didn't work (thanks Meta).

So if you guys see any posts from this account please report it!

Wastewater surveillance: useful for bird flu tracking.
GISAID: useful for bird flu tracking (though the tardiness in submitting HPAI sample data isn't entirely the provincial government's fault www.zoology.ubc.ca/~otto/Reprin...)

Aren't governments supposed to, you know, prepare for contingencies?

re-upping this ‘cuz it’s such a good read.

wanna know how we got here—the constant illness & infection, “tougher & longer” flu seasons, resurgence of measles, etc., etc., etc.?

Oh my god. It gets worse.
Except that they weren’t testing communal care residents. Over 2024 I followed many accounts at the bad place where people were begging for their loved ones to be tested when they became ill in LTC.

And people going to emergency with bad Covid symptoms were also not being tested.

This thread is a good reminder of why many of us are still wearing masks. Indoor air is filthy! We need more public awareness of the importance of clean air because we are never going to get it if the public does not demand it
Hedged my bets last night and went to a show for the first part of the evening. I’m so sad to see that the Capitol theatre in Moncton has such poor ventilation. I think the Imperial theatre in SJ made major HVAC investments. Ventilation this poor is bad for artists and audience. /1

Every word of this. It has made me question staying in healthcare because being faced with the intentional refusal to learn and do better every single day is so harmful to me. I’d rather be the airborne weirdo in another location than the… hospital. Every interaction is pain.
I’ve seen posters promoting Patient Safety Week around my hospital and I just…I mean we aren’t even wearing surgical masks. So like what are we doing here.
lol it’s once again Canadian Patient Safety Week and yet hospitals and healthcare facilities and leadership across Canada all pretend that COVID is not predominantly airborne, which causes vast harm to patients because effective protections are not in place.

Links to sources aren't working for me, but with public health and IPC AWOL on ventilation and PPE it'd be pretty irresponsible to start back-pedaling on vaccines now too without considering #longCOVID.

Is there even a plan to deal with the impacts in this thread? Thoughts and prayers? Ignore them?
From populists on the right, but also from establishment figures desperate to bury their responsibility, there's an ongoing push to bury the harms of COVID.

Long COVID alone costs 7M life-years (QALYs) and on the order of a trillion dollars a year in the OECD.

my neighbors on Keats Island are saying a humpback whale washed up, dead, at hard-to-come-by cove on the south side of the island.

it's likely the young whale that was hit in English Bay last week.

Respirators don't have the issue of "this vaccination has run out" or "the virus has mutated to reduce vaccine efficiency." They also help you avoid spreading COVID or ANY airborne illness to people who can't get vaccinated or whose immune system doesn't strongly respond to vaccines.

My unpopular take is that the government should mandate masked (respirators) shopping hours at essential grocery stores/pharmacies or provide a tax credit for delivery so disabled & immunopromised folks don't have to pay extra fees just to keep themselves safe and alive

erasing the public works projects of pre-colonial indigenous populations, claim instead that they're the work of nature

but the truth is that humans have been transforming the world for tens of thousands of years and no one in recorded history has witnessed true wilderness

This. Restoration of native ecosystems entails restoration of Indigenous lifeways.
hot take: leftists who yearn for a restoration of the natural beautiful of pre-colonial North America are harboring a fascist fantasy about a wild, untamed nature, when the truth is that a large amount of the "natural beauty" they love is indigenous artifice
