Blue

I thought, “What to do”
With a gemstone so new
Then out of the blue
I knew

I’ll carve & I’ll curve
Smooth and ensure
that each little angle reflects
A light in the dark
My sapphire shaped-heart
Desire to love & protect

Sweaty summer nights. The fan above my bed spinning, sending down waves of relief. Should probably get that AC fix’d, but that takes time & money, and who’s got both these days. No. Reckon I’ll just wait it out, toss & turn a bit longer. The gentle hum of the fan—a modern ‘merican lullaby.

She tapes her hands in silence. Outside the locker room, the crowd chants a name that isn’t hers. They don’t know her. Not really. They know the boxer, the woman who doesn’t flinch, who never turns down a fight, no matter how bloody it gets. But they don’t know the way she hums under her breath, an old lullaby her mother sang once. They don’t know that her first fight was to get her baby brother out of their father’s fists. They don’t know the notebook in her bag, filled with dreams written in cramped, neat lines. They don’t know her dreams, and wouldn’t believe it if they saw them. The myth was too strong. The bell rings. She steps out. Twelve ounces of leather on each hand. Twelve years of fury in her chest. She isn't fighting her opponent. She’s fighting herself, her pain, her demons. One punch at a time. And every punch is a prayer.

The notes came fluttering in, and something inside him stirred. It took him back, somewhere forgotten, a moment in time. The melody inside him grew, eyes misting as tears began to form—the music had to come out, the energy transferred—and before he knew it, he was humming along.

Always seeking out those three glorious alchemical reagents to turn water into life, pain into tolerance, misery to mercy. There are 3, and only 3… I've found 2, so far, and still I feel no closer than when I began... If I give up here, has it all been for nothing... If I give in now, were they right all along... This concludes the poem.
