At the JFed GA, claims about Holocaust education and antisemitism were used to explain away outrage over Israel’s genocide in Gaza. The story of Jacob and Esau uncovers what the Torah teaches about responsibility and the possibility of transformation.

American Council for Judaism: Toldot: Choosing Which Israel Ve Become A viral moment captured an attempt at explainging protesting Israels genocide in Gaza through the lens of antisemitism. The Torah gives us a higher truth. At the Jewish Federations® General Assembly, Sarah Hurwitz claimed that young people critique Israel because Holocaust education taught them to side with "the weak against the powerful." She framed antisemitism as a unique force that explains why people oppose Israel's actions in Gaza. Antisemitism is a real and dangerous threat, but removing it from its material contexts turns it into a political tool. Condescending to young people who seek justice shous the true goal: To obscures the real suffering of Palestinians and prevent honest engagement with the material realities shaping this moment. The story of Jacob and Esau in the Torah offers a different way to understand power and human relationships. Jacob deceives both his father and his brother, and the text does not hide his wrongdoing. Esau is left bereft, tricked by his brother.

I have been screaming this to the heavens for years and it’s lovely to see more people noticing: BEING safe is a right, FEELING safe is between you and your therapist. And the demand to FEEL safe is constantly weaponized to deprive other people of their real, actual safety.

One thing the NYC mayoral race underscored for me is how easily the phrase "I don't feel safe" can be weaponized. It's an argument I would hesitate ever to use again, even for a good cause. I hope we can all agree that we have the right to BE safe. Maybe we should leave it at that.

This is the facility that I and many others have been protesting. We’ve been hit, thrown, gassed, and shot with pepper bullets but none of that holds a candle to what is being done to people *in* the actual facility.

A family friend was telling us about what her husband shared about his experience in Broadview before he was deported back to Mexico. She's been sharing to friends and family because she's just in disbelief & horror what her husband told her. She wasn't able to talk to him until he was in Mexico.

It is a repressive and political attempt to enforce conformity regarding Israel and to police the boundaries of acceptable discourse within Democratic Party politics.

This kind of authoritarian maneuver — an attempt to equate Jewish identity with loyalty to a foreign state — is antithetical to the Jewish communal legacy of dissent, debate, and democratic participation. It heretically likens Zionism, a modern nationalist movement, to Torah, the core essence of Judaism. It echoes antisemitic views which conflate all Jews with the state of Israel, and essentialize all Jews into a singular political force.

An outsized percentage of us strongly support Zohran Mamdani, as demonstrated by the Jews for Zohran campaign. Brad Lander, New York City comptroller, the highest-ranking Jewish elected official in city government, and a respected community member, has publicly endorsed Mamdani, as has the most senior Jewish member of the House of Representatives, Jerry Nadler. A growing number of Jews believe that our dignity and safety do not depend on a foreign state but on building an inclusive, multiracial democratic society here at home.
