Curious to a fault. Also πολύτροπος. Talking here for me alone. I listen to the finest worksong. Like/repost = bookmark/news, not agreement/endorsement.
no offense to friends quoted, but this is a trip on several levels

The shutdown also highlighted this weakness — Democrats gave in because they (rightly or wrongly) feared getting the blame, which until then tilted heavily towards Trump.

what frightens Trump and his shrinking band of enablers about "don't give up the ship" is the bravery it alludes to, which is indelible and remembered every day

Over the years, there have been FIVE ships commissioned as the USS Lawrence in this young captain's honor

if you relied on media coverage to understand the lethal threats to your family, you would fall prey to a massive, tragic, and preventable scourge of innumeracy in public citizenship that could cost you dearly

the news is very important, but so is data

I like and appreciate Brad, but when I hear things like this, I remember why I'm a Bitter Southerner. There are many tropes, myths, and libels that divide us. I reject them all. We have more in common than we realize.

Come sit a spell. I'll put the kettle on.

this might sound harsh, but it's also evidence-based

"More than a dozen OB-GYNs reviewed the case for ProPublica...Some described her condition as a 'ticking time bomb.' Had Walker ended her pregnancy, every expert believed, she would not have died."

it is great and good that the Yale Budget Lab and the Center for American Progress have rid themselves of a burden

yet somehow Harvard's own students are not so lucky -- five courses including two large undergraduate courses are forced to continue despite the times

'tis a pity

That’s what I understood. But there’s other language in the court decision that says what was filed didn’t reflect no-bill on count 1 but true bill on counts 2 and 3.

Maybe there’s something I’m not getting?

this is disgusting but also consistent — who else could Summers solicit as a subject matter expert besides Epstein?

“Summers asked Epstein whether it was ‘meaningful’ to discuss the probability of ‘my getting horizontal w peril,’ drawing parallels to forecasting Trump’s reelection.”

It seems we learned nothing from the horror and stupidity of the "Torture Memos," except a lust for extrajudicial violence

Instead of waterboarding supposed 9/11 masterminds, we are deep-siding men in boats that we haven't identified, know nothing about, & send home if they live despite our agency

one of the reasons science is unreasonably successful is that it makes as few assumptions as needed

a crucial one is observer independence — truth can never depend on shared politics, religion, ethnicity, or other personal characteristic

this is what makes international collaborations possible

I'm not sure about the personal eschatology of every Republican who supported (and still supports) Trump, but this is not a good sign for their reception after all is said and done

as NOAA explains here, the Aurora Borealis is explained by our understanding of how electromagnetic fields work www.swpc.noaa.gov/content/auro...

In 2019 CSHL “unequivocally reject[ed] the unsubstantiated & reckless personal opinions” Watson expressed on ethnicity and genetics, calling them “reprehensible [and] unsupported by science. The Laboratory condemns the misuse of science to justify prejudice."

mockery is what the namesake amphibians in Aristophanes's "The Frogs" do to the Greek god Dionysus, who is rowing a boat and complaining about his sore butt

the frogs troll Dionysus in many ways, including onomatopoeia ("brekekekex koax koax")

once again I'm begging the people who write these sorts of headlines to learn a crumb of statistics

"average" = mean, median, or mode (usually mean)
in all cases "average" depends on distribution
all assume a single mode
most things aren't unimodal

P.S. I hate how easy it was to make this graph

Merida Aguilar’s request to stay in the US to care for Jair, a US citizen ― and to continue as sole financial support for his wife and their two other citizen children ― has been denied by ICE.

ICE concluded that “granting discretionary relief is not sufficiently warranted.”

this was an egregious mistake by Roberts, who cannot contemplate that his theory of the 'unitary executive' is a zero-day exploit

the Founders created our separation of powers because we're all fallen and imperfect, and that all powers of the state were at risk of falling into the wrong hands
