Dichteres Ester Naomi Perquin is vandaag 46 geworden. In onderstaand boek zijn haar eerste drie bundels verzameld, onmisbaar voor elke poëzieliefhebber. Een wonderschoon en ontroerend gedicht vind ik 'Meisjes'. Je ziet ze voor je. Deze maand verscheen haar roman 'Tot alles in beweging komt'.

CHRISTMAS here is a piece of me / it is my foot / or it is my spinal attachment / they put a tree in the living room / of course you'd want to climb it / only the problem is we are not small enough / and when we were small enough / we were not strong enough it wasn't even a question / I do not want this many parts / I wish I were only one thing / a kneecap maybe or a liver / if I had a real choice / I would be an analog phone / then when you were with me I would keep ringing / and when you kissed me I would hang up / one man knew how to sing like a dial tone / I think he was our king / unfortunately I noticed everything today / and the people won't let me return it

Dead Butterfly BY ELLEN BASS For months my daughter carried a dead monarch in a quart mason jar. To and from school in her backpack, to her only friend's house. At the dinner table it sat like a guest alongside the pot roast. She took it to bed, propped by her pillow. Was it the year her brother was born? Was this her own too-fragile baby that had lived—so briefly—in its glassed world? Or the year she refused to go to her father's house? Was this the holding-her-breath girl she became there? This plump child in her rolled-down socks I sometimes wanted to haul back inside me and carry safe again. What was her fierce commitment? I never understood. We just lived with the dead winged thing as part of her, as part of us, weightless in its heavy jar.

And suddenly I am back in summer 2006 where we were all taught skinny was the only kind of beautiful that counted, where the more nothing you could make yourself, the more worthy you were in existence. Your body should be non existent, the newspapers told us. Don't you dare take up space, you don't deserve it. We listened, because we assumed this was just the legacy of girlhood - to make yourself as small as possible. If there is anything I wish I could tell us back then, all young hopeful teenagers and strawberry lipgloss it is that hungry girls become hungry women who make a meal of their dreams to stay alive. Do not deny yourself the delights of this life. Instead make a feast of all that you are given. The love, the joy, the grief, the fury and become women of appetite.
