I have never, in my LIFE, watched something *for* realism. Realistic in general is good, and if something is OVERLY hokey, that can take me out (Godzilla and Rodan stick puppets, anyone?), but something that is not real looking like it's not real? Big fuckin deal!
My partner and I were talking about this the other night re: Ultraman and certain *fellow toku fans* disliking practical effects and miniatures for these same reasons.
For instance, this is from the first episode of Ultraman Gaia. I do not care if this looks "real," it looks goddamn incredible.
