It can be done. And Anglo fossil fuel magnates will continue to lose customers before they accept the change, so really governments are the ones who need to clear the path forward by (properly and greenly) regulating the transition!

A naked descent into authoritarianism is weirdly boring because what’s being debated is fundamentally uninteresting. Is the antifa legion burning down Portlan real or not? Well, let’s have someone look out the window over there. No? Okay. Facts are settled. It either matters or it doesn’t.

Contrary to Trump’s claim that “the radical left causes tremendous violence,” sociologists find that right-wing extremists account for the vast majority of attacks and deaths from domestic terrorism.

Right-wing extremist violence is more frequent and more deadly than left-wing violence − what the data shows
Donald Trump and top administration officials confidently assert that left-wing political violence is a huge problem in the US. They’re wrong, say researchers who study extremism.

The lack of mainstream coverage of regular huge protests reminds me of a talk from a Twitter employees who explained that they had to drop BLM off the Trending Tags section because otherwise it would have been there permanently. The modern media environment has no appetite for sustained movements.

i find this image so fascinating. it is both a literal example of authoritarianism but also a second-hand reproduction of the aesthetics of other authoritarian states. it's like a simulacra of authoritarianism whose purpose is to attempt to make the simulacra real.
This is a real photograph of Washington, DC this week, where the United States president has ordered military occupation in peacetime, and ordered the display of colossal portraits of himself.

Online age verification is not like "showing ID to buy alcohol" because

a) the liquor store doesn't get to scan your ID and store a digital copy of it forever in a database that will inevitably get hacked

b) you don't have to show ID to go to the library because they have cocktail recipe books
