Today marks one year since the Dec. 3, 2024 martial law declaration that rocked South Korea and still reverberates today. What’s on my mind today is the grit of South Koreans who rushed to the National Assembly that night, in freezing weather, to demand a return to democratic government.

Many factors make that so-recent gift of time to almost all of humanity possible.

One of the most important: vaccines.

This is chart is what RFK Jr. and his allies (Trump and Rs) are trying to flip.
Currently dorking out over this graph about child mortality with my brother. Just mind boggling to take in.

Today I saw the American Bittern in DC, and 3 Long-tailed Ducks in Maryland, east of DC. Aaand, a Black-chinned Hummingbird found yesterday, also in Maryland. A friend helped me with all three of them. It was sunny and cool
And in the meantime the bird I most wanted to see changed to American Bittern in DC. But as I said, things came up and I continued to listen to WPRB

Snow potential index — 2/10 (↑): Outside chance of a modest accumulation early Tues before rain; we’ll have another shot Friday night into Saturday, too.

The snow potential index is a daily assessment of the potential for at least 1 inch of snow in the next week in the DC area, on a 0-to-10 scale.

Around Portland, during a very long jaunt from southwest 23rd into downtown, then riverwalk to the pedestrian bridge, back southeast along division street. Absolutely zippo "war-ravaged" stuff. Just so many nice, thoughtful, creative people met in casual conversation along the way. 1/2

Morning weather: a few minutes of sleet, then it stopped. A while later, rain started. Result: I am still indoors, listening to WPRB.com. The bird I am/was most likely to look for is miles to the west, where there has been actual snow. And most DC area drivers don't know how to drive in snow ...

Pretty much ANY statistic you see cited to frighten you about vaccines comes from the VAERS database. (Including the recent evidence-free missive from Vinay Prasad). Here's why VAERS can NEVER be a proper source for population-level vaccine risk estimates.
