A Douglas C-47 military transport plane, used by the U.S. from World War II through the Vietnam War for troop transport, paratroopers, and cargo. While the Air Force and Navy retired their fleets of C-47s, a few remain in operation in the CIA’s black ops division. At the moment, a group of agents and researchers are on hand as top secret cargo is loaded into the bay of a C-47 registered to an international floral shipping company. A giant bouquet is painted on the fuselage. The paramycologist turns to the liminalogist as the cargo is forklifted into the C-47. My god, she says, have you ever seen anything like it? The liminalogist shakes his head in disbelief. The massive fungus nearly takes up the plane’s whole cargo bay. Mycelium dance in the air, thick as elephant trunks, and as long as rivers.

A black and white illustration of a steaming plate of spaghetti. I remember seeing a decal like this on the window of a restaurant in a strip mall outside of Charlotte. The strip mall was a ruin of jagged concrete and rebar, tangled through with kudzu. No windows or glass remained in the entire strip mall, except for this one restaurant. Bambini it was called. The restaurant sat there miraculously intact, a spaghetti sign on the window and a “We’re Closed - Come Back Later” sign on the door.

A profile view of the U.S. Air Force’s Boeing C-17 Globemaster III cargo plane. The C-17 can transport a payload of up to 170,900 pounds. Cargo might be anything from M1 Abrams battle tanks to scores of paratroopers and their equipment, to pallets of military supplies and humanitarian aid. A C-17 always accompanies Air Force One, carrying the presidential limousine and the Marine One presidential helicopter. Perhaps the most unusual cargo in the C-17’s operational history was January 2034, when a top secret mission landed in Kauai and took on an enormous sea snail shell. The C-17’s cargo bay is 27 meters long and 4 meters tall; the shell, loaded sideways, took up the entire bay, and it wasn’t even the largest shell found on Kauapea Beach the previous month. A team of malacologists and liminalogists from the Department of Defense were on hand, intending to accompany the plane and its cargo to its final destination in Newport, Connecticut. However, the plane lost contact en route and disappeared from ground radar and the Air Force’s own flight tracking systems. One minute the plane was there, the next it was not. The pilot’s final transmission sent Air Force and FAA investigators scrambling. The pilot had said, “Dear lord, I hear the sea.”

A silhouette of the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt attack plane, flown by the U.S. Air Force since 1976. Nicknamed the “Warthog,” the A-10 is a single-seat jet, which explains why, on a routine training mission in April, as a viscous black sludge began filling the cockpit, seeping in from the canopy and flight controls, there was no one to hear the pilot scream. The scream cut short when the pilot’s teeth liquefied into a noxious black tar that dripped down his windpipe. Forty minutes later, training mission complete, the pilot executed a perfect landing and stepped sprightly from the plane, smiling gamely to the ground crew, his teeth blindingly white.

A simple line drawing of NASA’s space shuttle. Given the lack of detail, the shuttle looks more like a toy than a bona fide spacecraft. Certainly there’s no indication that inside the payload bay sits a small glowing cube of unknown origin, retrieved from space by the shuttle’s long robotic arm. Commander Crippen studies the cube from the crew compartment. He’s reminded of a TV movie he saw a few years back. A cruise ship picks up an ancient sarcophagus that turns out to contain the anti-Christ. Yeah, not a good idea to pick up strange objects in outer space, especially when they’re humming and glowing blue.
