This is DAY ZERO – the brief opening chapter of my first novel, Exo (out in November from Diversion Books), in which an experiment runs out of control and some scientists run for their lives. They don't write 'em like this anymore. This yesteryear edition of Gerald Durrell's My Family & Other Animals has a blurb which reads like bookseller patter from 60 years ago. I love the list of animals moving from the ordinary & alliterative via the exotic to the sublimely ridiculous pet names.

Crikey.
So that now makes Lena McDonald, KC Crowne and Rania Faris leaving ChatGPT prompts in their ‘books’.

I’m so fucking tired, guys. If you don’t write, you’re not a writer. It’s that simple. Stop doing this to your readers, who PAY.

Readers and authors deserve better than this. 📚💙

For Broken Veil, we had to include several UnGooglable examples of “chthonic babble” - strange but redolent phrases that imply meaning but are strange, inhuman, not part of our world.

It’s one of our favourite ideas. Wondered where the term originated.

Just Googled it. It doesn’t exist.

What I'd like to see is some banging together of heads. Some insistence that reality is real and not negotiable, that humans are violent apes with easily hacked psyches, and that no dream worth its salt can stand without carefully understood and engineered foundations. H. Sapiens, Know Thyself.
