From today's wander upto Loadpot Hill, Arthurs Pike and High Street and the views down Ullswater in the Lake District from the cairns above Whinny crag. A super clear and calm day but very wet and muddy underfoot.

After executing Alex Pretti on Saturday, ICE has shifted to primarily targeting bus stops and elementary schools in my community this week. I cannot overstate how much of the ICE activity in my community is just targeting places where little kids are.
Video from this morning shows ICE agents deploying tear gas outside a Minneapolis preschool as parents shout, “This is a preschool! There’s kids here!”

Nice article from @nattyover.bsky.social about the state of particle physics as a field. It’s historically been perhaps the highest prestige and most prominent subfield of physics but there are genuine worries about the path forward, as Natalie clearly lays out. 🧪
First column for Quanta Magazine's new essay section, Qualia.

I take stock of particle physics, a field in crisis. What happened, and what now? Commentary here from many angles.

Please lmk your thoughts, or any tips or topic ideas I should look into. 🙏

Is Particle Physics Dead, Dying, or Just Hard? | Quanta Magazine
Columnist Natalie Wolchover checks in with particle physicists more than a decade after the field entered a profound crisis.

After being held in two of them as a boy, I fought for decades urging America to never again build concentration camps and put human beings in them. It breaks my heart to watch this happen twice now in my own lifetime.

ALEX PRETTI’S PARENTS: “He was a VA nurse who cared about people deeply, and he was very upset with what was happening with ICE... kidnapping children, grabbing people off the street — he knew it was wrong. He loved this country."

Good morning ☀️

Yesterday, with overcast skies and terrible lightning. A wet, immature, #BaldEagle drying off. After what I can only surmise was an unsuccessful attempt at hunting. They got dunked. 🤣 Never been this close. 😃

I don't remember ever shoveling snow that was so much like fine sand. Had to toss it over the snowbanks because it would just slide down again. Fortunately, it's light weight. Must still be very cold because the rhododendron leaves are tubular. Snow too deep to push--we are literally shoveling out.

A reminder to the news media: “conflicting accounts” is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.

NEW: Another declaration you have to read! Alex Pretti was shot near the apartment of a doctor, who saw the shooting occur and rushed to provide emergency aid as he lay dying on the street.

They describe what they saw: "The victim had at least three bullet holes in his back."

You have to read this. Firsthand affidavit from one of the women who was there and recording the video. She talks about how Alex Pretti was directing traffic when she arrived. She watched him be killed in front of her. She's afraid to go home, worried she'll be arrested.

Alex from our time working together, while he was in nursing school. Later, he moved to ICU, working as a nurse to support critically ill Veterans. He had such a great attitude. We’d chat between patients about trying to get in a mountain bike ride together. Will never happen now

It’s CONGRESS that can stop ICE and CBP deployment to MN. The Dems (and any responsible Rs?) should introduce legislation and agitate for a vote: “No federal funds may be used for further activities of ICE or CBP in the state of Minnesota, except for their prompt withdrawal.”
