We need to have as many different perspectives as possible to understand our universe.

He/Him

My opinions are mine alone. I don't represent any entity or other person.
The mother does all the work of raising the daughter. The father sometimes shows up. The thank-yous are, "I want to thank my mom for.... ALL THE THINGS. And I thank my dad for showing up today."

Taking a break from retrofitting grab bars in the bathroom for a family member to remind people:

Most of us are only temporarily physically abled.

If you can:
Install a ramp + landing at your entrance.
Install grab bars where needed.
Install accessibility features in your kitchen.

There are thousands of problems with the US for-profit healthcare system, not least is healthcare should never be a for-profit business in the first place. (I’ll block you if you argue this point).
A rant in several parts.+

What do people think of the #AAS #DPS bylaws amendments? I haven’t kept a close eye on these bylaws, so I’m uninformed.

This is why it is essential that we remain peaceful at all our protests, especially next week June 14 at our 1600 planned #NoKings rallies
Do not give these motherfuckers a reason to use violence against us

And there you have it. ICE didn't target migrant workers in Kristi Noem's farms or Sarah Huckabee Sanders' meatpacking plants because they wanted to create a riot in LA as a pretext to declaring martial law. They don't care about undocumented migrants, they only care about controlling US citizens.

I’ve been laughed at and yelled at multiple times because I’ve said we should never rely on companies that are so powerful that they don’t care if they lose their space exploration contracts.

I'm sitting, masked, in the airport. Almost nobody else is masked, of course. A lot of people are coughing, sneezing, etc.

Why is it socially acceptable to publicly, loudly cough, sneeze, otherwise spread your germs, but not socially acceptable to fart or burp, neither of which spreads illnesses?

The main planetary science meetings institution for the past ~40 years has decided to unilaterally and without notice delete abstracts from its repositories. The abstracts of mine that seem to have been deleted are all Equity, Justice, Accessibility, and Inclusion related.

One reason fascists get footholds is understanding threats to fascism more than we appreciate them as the things that keep us free. They go after them because they know they’re more than places to borrow books. If you wanna nerd out on the history of libraries here’s my fave dude. #protectlibraries

@katrinamillerphd.bsky.social & I took a look at over 400 active National Science Foundation grants that got killed in the past few days. Here's our story (gift link) nyti.ms/4jp4aOx

Remember those piece of shit private security guards who violently dragged a woman out of a GOP town hall in Idaho back in February? They’ve finally been charged.

The plainclothes guards were involved in the forcible removal of a woman from a meeting hosted by local Republicans in Coeur d’Alene, prosecutors said.

in a nutshell, AI has zero chance at eradicating disease, because we know what's involved in actually eradicating some of them, and the rate-limiting steps are not compute-bound

disease eradication implies solution of the 'last mile' problem at a global scale

BREAKING: A court ruled that our case challenging Rümeysa Öztürk's unlawful detention should move forward in Vermont, instead of Louisiana, and that ICE must transfer her there.

Nobody should be shipped to a detention facility halfway across the country for writing an op-ed.

Note that the NIH Payment Management System doesn't mange only NIH-funded payments. I know from personal experience that some NASA centers use the system.
Second (takes deep breath)

It appears that PAYMENTS FOR ALL GRANTS THROUGH THE PAYMENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM ARE BEING FROZEN.

If this is correct, then no funds will be transferred to any grantee institution, at least at this time.

I don't really care what the "political consequences" are of fighting for the proposition that *everyone* is entitled to due process before they are removed from the United States and sent to a Salvadoran prison.

It's not really a principle if you only adhere to it when it's politically expedient.

They don't care what they break as long as they break. The goal is to keep our responses divided. Those who care about democracy outnumber fascists, but it's impossible to be everywhere at once. We have to trust each other. Do the things you're good at and let others do the things they're good at.

Did you know...
From 1977 to 2020 there were only 28 cases of laryngeal burn from ingestion of hot food or liquid reported in the medical literature?
Of those 28, two were fatal.
If I go to a doctor, I might be case number 29 (of course, there might have been more since, I didn't bother to check).

It's not just anti-globalism protectionism. US consumers don't want them either. Auto mfrs have manipulated the clean air standards so the largest autos are least regulated & most profitable. The growth in truck size is not (just) a market demand issue. It's also a market manipulation issue.
My Trade Secrets today.

It's a longstanding American grievance that predates Trump: US companies can't sell cars in Europe & elsewhere because of evil trade barriers. It's actually because US protectionism has encouraged its carmakers to make clunky great gas-guzzlers no one else wants to buy.
Trump’s auto tariffs build on a long destructive history

The best thread on this subject I've seen so far.
Sigh. Why do we have to keep going through this? If I ever had scientific hints of life on another planet, the last thing I would do is publish before I had all my peers review it and tell me why I was silly for even thinking it was a hint of life.
An astonishing headline reporting on new observations from a team led to Nikku Madhusudhan claims they’ve found ‘hints of life’ on a planet orbiting a dwarf star some 124 light years away. What’s going on? (1/n) www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... 🔭 🧪
