Honestly, coming from a place as a huge flag nerd, I believe the /only/ indication on "is a flag good" is "how much do people use it when they don't need to." If your flag only flies in front of a state/municipal buildings it's because it's not worth using elsewhere.
I think these people give the game away when they disparage California’s flag. It’s far more iconic than any bullshit you bully some Utah suburb into adopting.

That said, I remain skeptical of the project of top-down flag design/adoption. The best flags emerge and evolve, they compete with alternatives via decentralized adoption, they integrate symbols from various sources, etc. This is how you produce a symbol with mass buy-in.

I'm reminded of the dumb "Democrats want to lose elections" argument from the last year. Obviously no candidate wants to lose; but I'm becoming increasingly convinced that pundits and consultants want to lose so they can keep selling this shit and not have to think about actual policy.
This exchange drives me nuts. Neither the interviewer nor Bazelon acknowledges that 1) abortion rights are really popular! and 2) what ICE is doing is hugely unpopular!

Yeah, definitely see this a lot around the Lincoln/Western updates. Complaints about parking, slower traffic, etc and little to say about the people who live here and need to cross these roads on foot. At least the work is getting done though.
One thing that’s so frustrating living in a city center is the pervasive belief among suburbanites that your neighborhood is nothing more than a consumer experience for them and that the city should bend over backwards to ensure they can speed as fast as possible on their way to buy treats in it.
