Just a late night reminder that if you’re getting into the films of Mira Nair, she’s one of the interview subjects of my book CINEMA HER WAY, which is still in stores now and would make a great Christmas gift.

guess I’m gonna have to GoFundMe my pacemaker replacement surgery next year cuz I can’t afford to pay double for my health insurance (I’m barely able to afford where it is right now)
Bernie Sanders: "What this Senate is about to do is make a horrific situation even worse. So let's be clear what this vote is about. If this vote succeeds, over 20 million Americans are gonna see at least a doubling in their premiums in the ACA."

In one of cinema’s earliest recordings, Auguste Lumière and his wife Marguerite are seen feeding their baby daughter Andrée. The footage, shot by Louis Lumiére, lasts only about 40 seconds or so. Pres...

Frankenstein has the Wicked problem: you watch it, and it’s obvious they did incredible work building real, stunning sets and designing extraordinary costumes, and then the cinematography/colouring/VFX make it all look fake anyway

but it ended up looking digital anyway…
Guillermo del Toro refused to use VFX for the ship in 'Frankenstein' so they built one from scratch ⚓️

"The ship is a character ... I didn't want the audience to go, 'Oh, this is all digital' ... once you introduce that, it's like a license for people not to believe things"

my #1 film of the year. just astonishing filmmaking.
PUT YOUR SOUL ON YOUR HAND AND WALK, whose subject, Fatma Hassona, was killed by Israeli forces one month before the film's premiere, is finally in theaters. And it's like nothing you've ever seen. www.vulture.com/article/revi...
The Spectacle of Our Own Helplessness
In Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk, we watch a filmmaker’s video calls to a young woman in Gaza and reflect on the things we cannot change.

Anyway a great way to radicalize people is for them to realize that you just abandoned their chance at being able to access and afford health care because you didn’t like waiting in line at the airport.

mamdani is going to impose mississippi masala law. everyone will have to watch his mother's movies and realize how much we've undervalued her at the expense of white female filmmakers who fit more easily into our understanding of "feminist cinema" or whatever.
Mamdani is going to impose Santana law. Everyone will have to duet with Rob Thomas.
Mamdani is going to impose Shania Law. It won't impress you much.

Major concession from Democrats here is enhanced ACA funds aren’t extended. Preserving them was Dems’ central demand in this fight. They secured a promise of a vote (which Thune has been offering for weeks), but that could still fail. Even if it passes, Johnson has made no promise of a House vote.
Tentative Senate deal to end shutdown, multiple sources tell me & @frankthorp.bsky.social:

—CR through Jan 30
—Approps minibus
—Fully funds SNAP
—Reverses Trump’s shutdown RIFs
—Promise of Senate vote on ACA subsidies by Dec second week (details/outcome uncertain)
—Led by King/Shaheen/Hassan

Gothic noir "Ladies in Retirement" ends with Ellen (#IdaLupino) walking into endless fog . . . actually into a stage + painted backdrop, which they sell by building a circuitous path between prop trees for Ellen to walk, and holding out til the last second for THE END

#Noirvember holds many flavors!

Western noir Blanche Fury has quite a fancy-brutal use of POV during this ambush scene.

We break it down further at shotzero.substack.com/p/blanche-fu..., but the effect is simply unmissable.
BLANCHE FURY's Shock Effect Through Editing
To kick off #Noirvember 2023, let's talk effective murder! Specifically this sequence from technicolour noir Blanche Fury (1948), which never show the bullet’s impact nor a drop of blood, but use a fe...

Note the power dynamic shifts with the blocking (more on our substack shotzero.substack.com/i/138989527/...)

beat it, indeed.

Here's a partial list of suspected guilty parties. Call them if they're your senators, friends, right now.

blacksky.community/profile/did:...
John Fetterman, Angus King, Maggie Hassan, Dick Durbin, Jon Ossoff, Jeanne Shaheen, Kirsten Gillibrand, Catherine Cortez Masto, Mark Warner, Cory Booker, and of course Chuck Schumer. Maybe others not top of mind. Not all responsible will publicly vote for the cave - that's not how this works.

Evergreen reminder that if the DC phone isn’t taking voicemails or calls, try the local office (5calls.org can help). CA folks, Schiff’s DC line was still taking voicemails, Padilla’s was not. I had to call his SF office to leave a VM.
Okay, Ezra is confirming that he's hearing D senators are actually plotting to cave to Trump and end the shutdown WITHOUT any extension of the ACA, just a promise of a vote later down the line.

Call your senators, friends, NOW, and tell them NO DEAL without ACA funding!
