January 18 will mark three years since Georgia State Patrolmen murdered Manuel Teran, known to fellow forest defenders as Tortuguita, in Weelaunee Forest.

People around the world will observe the Day of the Forest Defender with events.

So not exactly #NaNoWriMo for me. But the intention is to work on initial draft of my nonfiction @novasutras.bsky.social book, at least 5 hours per week, all month. Some of it is new writing, some of it is outlining, some of it is revising and reassembling prior work. But it's building the 1st draft

What I am going to be doing in this newsletter moving forward is talk about the language of fascism and political disinformation more broadly. I will still bring in climate change as much as I can, while paying attention to the overarching methods and strategies the authoritarian right is using to warp the views of the electorate and create consensus around their blatant assault on our democracy and our power as citizens with freedoms. I believe this work is valuable right now. Yes, the Republicans command a vast propaganda empire, networked from right-wing think tanks and advertising firms through Congress and the White House to FoxNews and out across the whole global landscape of social media, assisted and amplified by Russian intelligence operations, which are attacking us on every platform. But — and this is something I argued in my book, The Language of Climate Politics - right-wing propaganda only works to create political consensus if its terms are repeated uncritically by the center-left and the left. It is this repetition that "constructs" political reality, establishing norms and frameworks for action, as well as beliefs and desires. And it is this repetition that enables authoritarianism to creep ever more into the imagined community through which America is constantly being made and remade. Yet this "authoritarian creep" is PRECISELY what we have the power to combat! We can do it by 1) inoculating people against authoritarian framings and disinformation by talking about how these discourses work even before they are encountered in the wild, as it were, 2) pushing back when we hear people spreading lies, if not to persuade the liars then to remain committed to the truth, and 3) speaking about what's happening in terms that don't cede the fight to our enemies before we've even stepped on the field. But what is even more horrific is that many non-government scientists and institutions are self-censoring themselves because they are scared of the government and losing funding.

The most iconic figure in the environmental sciences is the Keeling Curve, the CO₂ record from Mauna Loa, Hawaii.

@noaa.gov had a wonderful site where you could visualize and download these data, and now it's just gone. These data belong to us and we should not let this happen!
