Here's @garethdennis.uk making a case which I've made for years (even when I lived in Inverness and travelled south regularly): dualling the A9 Perth to Inverness is the wrong solution (estimated cost- £3.8bn). Better to dual & electrify the Highland Main Line £4.5bn)

Seems like it necessarily would…15% of all civilian deaths reported to the National Fire Incident Reporting System with a known source of heat ignition were started by cigarettes, pipes, cigars, or some undetermined smoking material.
I wonder if there are any studies on whether the rise of zyns/vaping reduces fire risk

I strenuously object to the implicit assertion that people don't want to hear about other people's holidays. I do! In Iran they have an outdoor picnic day (Sizdah Bedar). In Japan there's a bean-throwing day (Setsubun). There's a whole world of fascinating rituals and traditions.

Floor plan from Wang Fuk Court, complex that is burning. Very typical for Hong Kong – cruciform plan with scissor stairs in the core (good way to balance dual egress with plan efficiency and cultural demand for ventilation). Doors are pretty remote from each other www.house730.com/en-us/estate...

Seems likely the father called ICE and or had his sister use her influence to do so on the mother of his child.
“After Ferreira was detained, Dos Santos Rodrigues said Michael Leavitt Sr. and his father, Bob Leavitt, reached out to her.”

“‘They just kept saying, ‘Tell her to self-deport,’” she recalled. “Self-deport to where? Brazil is not her home.’” www.bostonglobe.com/2025/11/26/m...
‘Brazil is not her home.’ Mother of Karoline Leavitt’s nephew, brought to US as child, detained by ICE. - The Boston Globe
Bruna Ferreira, 33, was brought to the United States as a child in 1998. She is now in removal proceedings in Louisiana.

Hong Kong requires two stairs in high-rise apartment buildings. The problem, which seems to have been lost in the British reaction to Grenfell, is that two stairs are a poor substitute for the exterior of your building not being consumed by fire.
Breaking News: The death toll rose to 13 in a fire that engulfed several apartment towers in Hong Kong. Firefighters were struggling to contain it.

Mayor Muriel Bowser announced today that she won’t be seeking a fourth term in office next year.

This creates a huge opening for the 2026 D.C. mayoral race.

The bad thing about this problem is the path to correction is going to be a real PITA for a lot of people.
