🦇 November is here and for bats periods of torpor are lasting longer. Some begin hibernation, to save energy over the colder months, when insects are harder to find. They are using stored fat as fuel.

Headless bird thread for Halloween 🎃
Three signets all feeding with their heads out of view as their heads are under the water. They are mottled colour as they have started to grow their adult feathers. The goats were enjoying the sun this morning. I’m not sure what breed of goat they are - some had impressive curved horns that appeared handy for scratching their backs.
In the foreground is a goat eating something off a branch this laying on the ground. The patch of ground is brown because it is covered in leaves that have fallen. The goat has a black head and neck. Its body is mainly white. It’s a bit shaggy haired and has two smallish horns. A bit further back is a second goat. It sits on the ground. It has two big horns that curve backwards over its back. Beyond this goat is a green field edged by trees. As it’s a sunny morning and where the goats are in relation to the direction of the sun, they are a bit backlit

A happy story for today. I helped reunite this lost cat with its people earlier today.

A lot of magpie noise earlier today. There were four or five magpies about. Not sure if they were chattering as a warning about a cat or squabbling amongst themselves.

Lots of people saying they’ve got bumper crops of apples and such atm. If you’ve too many and don’t know what to do with them, ask your local Foodbank or cooperative pantry if they could use them! Dad got 2kg to the Fishguard Foodbank earlier.

I am teaching an online shark biology and ecology class, which you can take for graduate course credit, CPE credit, or just for fun!

It includes an optional 3-day field research experience in Miami (November 20-22).

The class won't fill up but the field experience is half full- join ASAP!

I have some time this morning so I will introduce the project I’m taking part in. I am sailing on Saga Farmann, a reconstruction of the Klåstad ship. It dates from 998 and was found near the the site of Kaupang in southern Norway. Only 40% of the original ship survives #Saga25 #MedievalSky 1/

It's the roaring 20's and York is 'a walled city of great antiquity'.

There's a military parade on and you and your flapper friends are taking a stroll over Lendal Bridge.

Have you had a haircut?! Oh we adore the shingle on you! So modern!
We are looking at a gouache on paper of a military parade over a bridge. Gun carriages and soldiers on horses cross over the bridge whilst people look on. To one side is a river with several boats heading down the river. Dominating the scene is the medieval York Minster. Groups of fashionable people follow the parade into York.

Thought we'd post one of ours for a change. Our Floral Mosaic was the first to be discovered on the site, and here it is, being excavated in 1960.

You could take ideas for your design from the exhibition Firm Foundations: St Albans School of Art.  Suitable for families with children aged 7 and over. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
