Natterers bat (Myotis nattereri) in torpor-a state of decreased physiological activity, usually marked by:reduced body temperature & metabolic rate. Torpor enables animals to survive periods of reduced food availability. Insect availability in winter is low so bats have evolved to hibernate.

Dinky little long eared bat thought he'd found a great winter roost behind a disused loo at a heritage site in Cumbria. He was unexpectedly uncovered during work, came into care for a check up and added 20% to his weight in two days. Such a sweetie, he goes home tonight. #lovebats #batcare 🦇🥰
