"He essentially said, 'I’m not going to hide who I am to make you comfortable.' In doing so Mamdani delivered a raciolinguistic reality check that refuses the idea that politicians of color need to translate themselves into whiteness to be viable."

Zohran Mamdani Just Gave American Politics a Raciolinguistic Reality Check
Zohran Mamdani just won the New York City mayoral race, and it’s a big deal for reasons that will no doubt be dissected for years to come. But what really stands out to me is how this moment shifts…

I am talking about K-12 urban schools where kids are drilled in 5 paragraph essays to increase test scores so that their schools don’t close down. Unfortunately, students are not encourage to develop writing voices unless they are privileged and/or possibly in college (though not even then often)
I wonder what schools he's speaking of though? During all the years I taught college composition, it was always about helping students discover and find confidence in their own voice. Every other teacher in my department would've said the same.
It is kind of ironic that schools have spent so many years trying to convince students that academic writing should be completely devoid of any personal voice and are now in a state of crisis trying to deal with students using generative AI to write assignments that completely take away their voice.

I have always found comments like listen to x marginalized group at best condescending and at worse dehumanizing because the comments often presuppose that x marginalized group all believe the same thing erasing the complexities and contradictions that shape any community’s views.

Those of us in educational linguistics are familiar with how the research consensus on the benefits of bilingual education have been attacked as promotion “racial ideology.”

The same has happened with gender affirming care which has strong research support and is attacked as “gender ideology.”
1. A landmark study was just published in The Journal of Pediatrics.

It found a 68% reduction in suicidality for trans youth getting HRT.

It also found only 7 of more than 400 stopped taking HRT... and of those that did, 4 still identified as gender-diverse.

Transgender care saves lives.
Study In The Journal Of Pediatrics Finds Trans Youth Care Lowers Suicidality, Few Detransition
The groundbreaking study found that suicidality dropped for transgender youth receiving hormone therapy by nearly 70%, with only 7 patients of 432 discontinuing treatment.

Yes and at the same time the problems we are seeing with AI have their foundations in the move away from public libraries as the primary information retrieval system to a for-profit company that has monetized knowledge
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

The Trump/Mamdani bromance provides even more evidence that the neoliberal political order is collapsing in the face of populism. It also shows the two paths that this populism can take—one that seeks to push us back to the 1950s and the other that seeks to push us to a more egalitarian future.

Unless the Dems are willing to hold their own members accountable if/when the Epstein files are released in the same way that they hope to hold Trump and the GOP accountable this will just become another partisan pissing match that once again victimizes the survivors
Hakeem Jeffries defends the congresswoman who texted Jeffrey Epstein during a hearing, saying she "is not accused of violating any House rule, any law, any statute."

i remain shocked at just how badly elite higher ed admins have stewarded universities. these presidents and chancellors and provosts, supposedly accomplished people, have collectively overseen a staggering nationwide collapse in every respect.
One reason why elite schools (Columbia, Brown, Cornell) caving to Trump’s illegal impoundment and extortion is so galling — a betrayal, really — is that they would have won had they fought. By giving up, they guaranteed every other school will have to fight harder.

One of the sexual predators at the heart of these files has literally become president of the United States twice but sure that era is clearly gone
This is nauseating: “As the emails stretch through the years, they show how that protected realm vanished into the mists of time, pulled under by the rising forces of the internet and the #MeToo movement.” A “Gone With the Wind” framing for sexual abuse and harassment.
Seriously, what is wrong with these people?

GOP presidential hopeful are going to divide into the Trump loyalists like Vance and Rubio who will likely be caught up in having to explain their role in the Epstein cover-up and the anti-Trump wing like MTG who believe in the same fascist policies but don’t want to be connected to this scandal
BASH: We have seen these attacks from the president at other people. It's not new. And I haven't heard you speak out about it until it was directed at you.

MARJORIE TAYLOR GREENE: I think that's fair criticism. And I would like to say, humbly, I'm sorry for taking part in the toxic politics.

What the Epstein files clearly shows is that both political parties have been captured by massively wealthy elites who smugly email each other about raping young girls while insisting it is progressives who are elitists for doing “woke” things like acknowledging that trans people exist.

One of the reasons the Dems have been such an ineffective opposition party is that most of them are part of the same elite networks as Trump and his entourage
The Epstein story gets a something that is tearing at the heart of the electorate: elite impunity. The idea that wealthy and powerful people can do terrible things *at scale* and face no consequences for them. Whatever political party actually stops it could rule the country for a generation.

It is so ironic that QAnon was actually right about the existence of an elite sex cabal but also supported giving it more power in the belief that one of its ringleaders becoming president would somehow stop it
🚨 Doesn't get much clearer than this:

"Republicans are running a pedophile protection program." -Leader Jeffries

And there you have it.

Earnest post: there is increasingly direct evidence that Trump participated in child sex trafficking or at least knew about it.

He should resign, be impeached and removed from office, and prosecuted.

Even if you don’t think that WILL happen it’s important to say publicly that it SHOULD happen.

I really don’t get it. If the threat of eliminating the filibuster means that nobody uses it anymore to force bipartisan compromise then hasn’t the filibuster already essentially been eliminated?
I think this helpfully confirms the notion that the end of the filibuster was a big motivator for the eight Dems.
Heaven forbid the Republicans get rid of the filibuster…
