When I went home to Mississippi last week, a Black farmer welcomed folks to pick greens from his land for free. It made me wonder whether other communities across the country were also giving back ahead of the holiday.

The answer: yes, they are.

Oh! Don't forget the cheat code for amazing mashed potatoes is to warm up your milk/cream/melted butter so that it blends well with your hot potatoes and mash them altogether. 🥰

This is true
There's a window where a giant box of crayons is insulting rather than delightful and that window is roughly age 12-17. If your gift recipient is too cool for everything, they won't want a box of crayons. Everyone else, tho; Young kids always need crayons, and adults will get amused and sentimental.

News you can use!
Adding an apple to your fresh cranberry sauce will help give it body because the pectin in the apple act as a gelatin

I use one Granny Smith per 12oz bag of cranberries, peeled, cored & chopped to approximate cranberry size

OMG YES THIS if there is a theme in my writing assignments it is write something that lets me hear your voice
It is kind of ironic that schools have spent so many years trying to convince students that academic writing should be completely devoid of any personal voice and are now in a state of crisis trying to deal with students using generative AI to write assignments that completely take away their voice.

This. In fact, one of the reasons I disappeared into the kitchen is to get away from you. (The exceptions I can count on one hand, and I’ll say “come talk to me”.)
I also don’t need company. You don’t have to talk to me I need to talk to myself 😭

“Silly-sounding science is what happens when researchers do exactly what they are supposed to do, which is thinking freely and exploring new ideas with wide-open curiosity.”

It occurs to me that this could also be said about education, and why leaving space for “just messing around” is important
Every year around Thanksgiving, I see tons of grad students post heartbreaking messages on social media about how their loved ones don’t understand or support their decision to study what seems like something pointless or silly.

Perhaps my American Scientist essay can help!

“Why Are We Funding This?”
Long-standing myths about “silly science” have contributed to the reckless slashing of government-supported research.

Others report similar treatment. Nigerians were forced to cross into Togo w/o documents, rendering them essentially stateless

This Day in Labor History: November 25, 1865. Mississippi created the first of the Black Codes. Designed to recreate slavery in all but name, this signified the South’s resistance to the freeing of their labor force and the lengths to which it would go to tie workers to a place under white control.
