Over the past few weeks I’ve been hearing this monotonous sound from my backyard in Sydney’s inner suburbs!

Tawny Frogmouths are superbly camouflaged nocturnal birds & are often overlooked during the day.

This year, these were some of my favourite reads by Australian First Nations storytellers. Stories of joy, defiance, resilience, community and healing. And a reminder, picture books make great gifts – for kids and for yourself. 1/2

Hi everyone. I felt really dejected for a long time about the state of science communication on Twitter, and was reluctant to give things a try on yet another new platform. I’m so touched by the support everyone has shown so let’s give this one last go, as KaiTheFishGuy on Blue Sky!

A bit disconcerting when one of the world's largest moth species is attracted to your headlamp! Found this beautiful Hercules Moth in far north Queensland.

A favourite Powerful Owl pic from early owl detecting days. @doktrnick.bsky.social and I were looking at a map thinking an area 'might have owls.' 15 minutes later while looking at scat wondering if it might be POwl scat I was reminded to look up. I think his expression says it all #birds #wildoz

Sleeping Blue-bum Bees! 🐝😴

Here are the SPECTACULAR Northern Blue Banded Bees (Amegilla walkeri) roosting from my video the other day! 💙

Males group together to roost at night on a small exposed stick like this. If a predator was to walk up the branch and shake it they would all disperse! 🐝

By day, I work in Engineering. In 2017 I picked up a camera and started learning about birds and bugs and all sorts of animals. There are plenty I used to be afraid of that I now think are amazing. Biology is a gd miracle. So, if you're afraid, go observe. It could completely change your world.

Great effort pulling these datasets together. There is still so much we don't know about how increasing wildfire risks will impact Australian biodiversity!

In this massive collaboration, >100 Australian ecologists put a novel spin on meta-analysis to discover how fire frequency, interval, unburnt area, pre-fire drought and protected areas modify fire impacts.🌏

🧵One of the most encouraging trends in academia over the last decade is the semi-spontaneous emergence of a massive interdisciplinary network committed to confronting scientific racism in all of its disgusting forms and applications
I decided to go ahead and make a starter pack of historians, scientists, and others who work on scientific racism. If you’d like to be added to the pack (or removed from it), let me know.
