The rules I was fighting fascism with the power of love and kindness and just really getting my ass handed to me. A total bloodbath. The referee would have stepped in by now but they had knocked him out with a steel chair. The only others watching were either fascists themselves or the people trying to fight fascism with the power of love and kindness and they weren't having a great go of it either. I kept trying to explain in between haymakers that we were better than this and on top of that it wasn't likely to be ruled on favorably as far as the courts. None of it helped. I was on my knees now bleeding profusely from the mouth and nose. It spilled out of me onto the snow in a pattern that if you sort of squinted at it just so from the right vantage looked like a heart. See that I pointed. Look how beautiful the world can be I tried to say through my broken teeth. Alright well now he was pulling out a gun. I didn't think we were allowed do that.

I'm sorry. As a technology writer, I'm supposed to be telling you that this bet will some day pay off, because one day we will have shoveled so many words into the word-guessing program that it wakes up and learns how to actually do the jobs it is failing spectacularly at today. This is a proposition akin to the idea that if we keep breeding horses to run faster and faster, one of them will give birth to a locomotive. Humans possess intelligence, and machines do not. The difference between a human and a word-guessing program isn't how many words the human knows. I'm sorry. I know that when we talk about "digital sovereignty," we're obliged to talk about how we can build more data-centres that we can fill up with money-losing chips from American silicon monopolists in the hopes of destroying as many jobs as possible while blowing through our clean energy goals and enshittifying as much of our potable water as possible.

The 1930s Technocracy movement is one hell of a fully-automated rabbit hole to go down.

I think I recognise the "we must embrace because it's happening anyway" mentality in a pamphlet published in 1939.

4. Will it be satisfactory to all concerned? This question as it involves the tastes, opinions, formed habits, emotions, idiosyncracies, etc., of people, no two alike, is the hardest to deal with. But even the most hardboiled and hardest to suit would probably come to like living under a Technate. At any rate it is quite possible that you would have to take it whether you liked it or not. That would be rather a raw deal, wouldn't it? — to have all of the very things that you wanted forced upon you? The only way to avoid enjoying all these things — the full and unrestricted gifts of science, as released by technological control — would be to commit suicide or leave the country permanently. Get this fact firmly: Technocracy is not advocated because it may be desirable. Technocracy does not deal in any way with people's emotions, or desires, or wishes, or dreams. All Utopian states in the past have been formulated by dreamers who started out by postulating what they thought would be the best or more desirable. Technocracy starts out with the facts at hand which indicate what the next most probable state of society will be, and whether that state will be desirable from the standpoint of people's opinions or not, has nothing to do with the question. However, and fortunately, it all seems to be highly desirable, even to the most skeptical. For Technocracy, the only test is : 'Will it function ?'
