My time in the classroom is coming to a close, and I’ve been inspired by @heymrsbond.com and @marcusluther.bsky.social

Here comes my Daily Gratitude Journal:

“Independent” is doing too much work in this first wave. They are arresting journalists and just like everything else they’ve done, they’re testing the limits of our resistance by starting wt vulnerable margins.

It’s LABORIOUS.

It takes so much to make going analog work AND it’s worth it. It’s shifted the foundation of my teaching practice for the better, but not without a lot of thought, research, and reflection.
I did this in all of my courses and it fundamentally changed the classroom, the students’ work, our conversations, and my pedagogy.

We all see the beauty and magic of learning if we actually put in the labor necessary to grow.

"Non-violent tactics that waste a company’s time or money are really effective. For Enterprise, we’ve made and cancelled car reservations, saying the roads are too icy. At Home Depot... people [lined] up to buy ice scrapers and then getting in line to return them, in a way that clogs the lines."
"We had one hotel publicly refuse to house ICE, which became a big national news story when DHS went after them. That’s a hotel we were targeting, and it was mostly because of our pressure. We had two more hotels temporarily shut down to avoid housing ICE..."

I’m ok. I’m a survivor so this small agitator isn’t going to intimidate me from doing my work.

I don’t let bullies win.

Grateful to my incredible constituents who rallied behind me. Minnesota strong.

John has written an amazing book about Washington and slavery. Highly recommend having him in your show/podcast/newsletter to discuss it.
I know I don't have a ton of media followers, but I'll put this out there anyway: if you need someone to comment/offer context on the removal of the slavery exhibit at the President's House site in Philly, get in touch. I just finished an entire book on Americans' fight over Washington and slavery.

As somebody who is living abroad on a work visa and is definitionally an immigrant—I have a lot of thoughts watching what is unfolding.

One of them is that what is happening in Minneapolis is more brazenly authoritarian than anything I've experienced in my time in the Middle East or in China.

Dr. King suffered many bouts of severe depression. His autopsy found that he had a heart consistent with a 60 year old. He was murdered at 39. Stress, threats and exhaustion will do that to a person.

If people who are living in the midst of an invasion tell you that an action you are taking IS UNHELPFUL, the proper response is "thank you so much for letting me know. What would be helpful?"

or You can just STFU and keep it moving. You don't have to have a public meltdown. It's OK.

In December, I traveled to Montgomery to visit the Legacy Museum, which traces the story of Black America from slavery to Jim Crow to mass incarceration. I wanted to understand how the museum & its affiliated sites were operating in a moment where so much of the history they present is under attack.

Hey teachers:

Speaking truth to power in your classroom, especially in places that want silence and compliance, is activism. Telling the truth in a room full of students is THE WORK. Refusing to back down and refusing to lie in your curricular decisions is protest. +

Hey home adults,

If there’s a teacher in your students’ life who is making a positive impact on their learning, please send them an email, class dojo message, Remind, etc

It’s REALLY hard to keep going right now and a little kindness can go a long way.

🧵 of the day👇
The first assignment my comp 2 students do is an identity curation. They collect and write a rationale about 5 artifacts that describe who they are as writers. The artifacts can be memes, songs, pictures, etc.

One of my students had a picture of Charlie Kirk in their curation. 1/5

Thread. [the shorthand about her that is often uplifted on social media always does her a disservice and also does Rosa Parks one too. Glad for this thread]
Friends, Claudette Colvin—the 15-year-old who refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus in March 1955 & joined the federal case against bus segregation that went to the Supreme Court — died today at age 86. But there are lots of myths and mis-impressions about her. A short corrective thread:
