Happy World Town Planning Day, Everybody.

I can recommend two aural accompaniments to this most special day.

Firstly, episode 152 of Fifty Shades of Planning.

Secondly, ‘Music To Plan Towns To'. The ultimate town planning-themed playlist.

Do you work in the fast-paced, ever-changing, rock and roll world of town and country planning?

If so I would be grateful if you could take a few moments to have a read of this (and even more grateful if you would then share it as widely as possible).

There's some core "value" assigned (IIRC) by UK Gov's DFT on the time/amenity of a single motorist in their car; it's higher than the archetypal pedestrian or cyclist and is the basis to evaluate many authorities' infra costs & space-assignment.

Where are those figures from? @ianwalker.bsky.social

“I am part of a generation brought up being told cars equal freedom… it’s what everything in this country - housing, roads, motorways, car parks, shopping centres, supermarkets, jobs, factories was geared up, developed and created to serve, cater for and encourage”

Good read this.

New analysis of relationship between car weight and fatal collision rates in the UK finds “ppl driving heavier cars are disproportionately involved in more fatal collisions”.

Particularly the case for those involving other cars or pedestrians.

How would children improve transport?

This list looks good to me.

Government support for these actions is an investment in future generations, and has long term benefits for public health, communities and the environment.

Great work from Sustrans & Halfords.

Do you want to make UK transport better? There’s one thing you can do about it. But you’ve got to do it before tomorrow evening.

One for the tram lovers.

Key point is that our cities should have far more powers to raise funds & make transport investments locally.

David (of @createstreets.bsky.social) is right, this kind of thinking should be central to Labour’s house building plans (ie enabling transit oriented development)
It’s time for trams – and Britain needs to catch up
David Milner explains how Europe's thriving tram networks are driving growth and cutting congestion, while the UK's cities struggle with poor transport, high housing costs, and weak productivity

Where in the UK is doing (or planning) good things with traffic network management? I'm thinking Ghent-style circulation plans, innovative methods, bold traffic restrictions etc.
Birmingham? Oxford? Edinburgh?
