What do they know of town planning who only town planning know? (h/t C.L.R. James.) This is very much not a work account.

Were I not a town planner I like to imagine myself as The Times’ Chief Football Writer and to indulge that fantasy I write a match report on Instagram after every game that I have been to, this compilation of which tells the story of my 2024/25 season.

In the late 90s, Mick Jagger decided he wanted to follow cricket while on tour with the Stones.

So he did the only logical thing: he formed a company, partnered with Cricinfo bought streaming rights & broadcast it on the internet.

A piece on that 👇

The Rolling Stones' lead singer, a huge cricket fan, spotted the huge potential of the internet while others still treated it with suspicion

Reeves has just confirmed that she is scrapping the plans for huge increases in landfill tax - which could have added £25k to the cost of building a house. This is very good news for the housing sector.

Utterly surreal that a key part of the pre Budget narrative from the government hasn’t been ‘Russian planes keep buzzing the Essex coast, US support for NATO is looking shaky, and thanks to the Tories our army fits in Old Trafford - that’s why we need to raise taxes’.

I think this is a very important point in yimby discourse: people say they don’t like densification but in London at least the densification is happening anyway. It happens via house shares, kids living in parents houses forever etc. you get the densification with or without more housing!
A long time ago Ian Mulherin made this chart and this is densification. That part is already happening! Look at the line for London!

The demand-side problem: could the Government bring back equity support for first time buyers?

(I have heard this week of a builder with 100 unsold homes on one site (which must be costing millions in interest) and another that is mothballing sites for private sale.)

There is a second political strategy imho. GM is not as robust as it looks. One or two Reform led councils could completely disrupt the entire show, which is predicated on everyone largely moving as one. This is partly intended to futureproof a collective investment strategy and its principle
