Aging housewife. Troublemaker.
Haidt is a self promoting opportunist. Law enforcement responses to this issue were appropriate & effective. Law suits doesn't stop crime. Police do. It's this kind of drivel that has endangered kids and expanded the problem dramatically. So in reality, the opposite of his "thesis" is true.
OMG. Haidt just said that regulators have never ever even tried to protect kids on the Internet until his book came out, which ignores basically every other internet regulation fight from 1995 onward.

Why does anyone listen to this man?
Standing on a train platform listening to the latest Hard Fork and, I'm sorry, but I'm not sure Jonathan Haidt understands what causation means. Hosts ask him to explain how he's proven causation and he cites single examples of individualized harm which have nothing to do with his broad thesis.

Always inspired by the fearless leadership of @wyden.senate.gov our playbook reflects his approach to child protection. Ignore predators is enabling predators.

The last conversation I had w/ my FBI Agent father before his untimely death was re his concerns about the militarization of law enforcement. It was 1991. His fears turned out to be extremely prescient. This is a trend we need to walk back immediately. @rokhanna.bsky.social food for thought.
Gallego: "What type of man decides to walk around with a phone camera & at same time tries to make life & death decisions, then decides to pump one bullet that may have been forward-facing, but clearly the other 2 were on the side. Who is he? Clearly not someone who should be in law enforcement."

AV is not like waving your license in front of a sleepy liquor store clerk. Kids are already biggest target of ID thieves. Let's not amplify that exposure. www.techdirt.com/2026/01/06/w...

One of the most common refrains we hear from age verification proponents is that online ID checks are nothing new. After all, you show your ID at bars and liquor stores all the time, right? And it’…

Literally the only person in Congress, along w/ his House compatriots, who gets this issue right. You can't "protect" kids w/out attacking the predators who victimize them. This is a law enforcement problem & those resources are already stretched thing. #InvestinChildSafety. @wyden.senate.gov
Fact check true
Ron Wyden, the single senator who actually understands technology, has repeatedly tried to address this problem (see: www.techdirt.com/2024/01/31/a...) and Congress has ignored it in favor of performative grandstanding bills that do nothing for child safety (or makes it worse!)

If you're looking for truly independent reporting and comprehensive coverage on tech and related issues @techdirt.com should be your must read every day. @mmasnick.bsky.social leadership ensures that it's the first post I open every day.
I hate how much of the media business model these days has become "annoy readers until they pay." Paywalls, registration walls, see half the article before you need to subscribe, pop up reminders, etc.

I'm hoping @techdirt.com can prove there's a better way.

But it needs your support to prove it.

That few, if any, senior Democrats in the Senate are listening to one of the smartest & most senior Dems in Congress is jaw dropping. In decades of watching Congress attempt to do dumb things, this move is in a class by itself. Ignoring @wyden.senate.gov warnings is the ultimate fool's errand.

Being opposed to KOSA is not being "for" Big Tech.....it's about being opposed to predators and being for kids. Letting predators & drug dealers roam around is reckless & irresponsible. Start there.
I know it's very unpopular On Here to suggest that law enforcement should handle anything, but my friend @mosy48.bsky.social is entirely correct in this article. KOSA and similar statutes are pointing at the wrong thing. Many people On Here also believe that, of course.
