Sometimes finalizing a rough draft is a breeze because past you was a genius. Other times, finalizing a rough draft is a kind of written warfare between you and the past and you and the present.

I experienced both types today. Humanity is full of multitudes.

I wrote my #ReadingLog for November a few days ago, but I forgot to post it on this website. I've been working on catching up on my magazine subscriptions in between frantically working, so it's a short one.

Still fun to write though, so enjoy if this is your thing!

Always nice to get a message on LinkedIn from a recruiter from some company or other asking me if I would like to help them do quality assurance on data sets that they're trying to use to replace me.

How about no? I would rather launch myself into the sun.

Reminder to freelancers that you really need to read your contracts before you sign them. Reading contract language, especially if in a different language, isn't easy, but doing so may save you the potential future harm of overly broad clauses in the contract.

You need to be careful.

Didn't expect to lose hours of my life today attempting to learn how to write believable Early Modern English for two throwaway lines that will definitely never come up again in this series I'm translating.

A solution has not yet been found. I am suffering.

October was a bit lackluster for reading because I was so busy, but I finally managed to get my #BookLog for the month written. I hope anyone who actually reads these things enjoys the small excited rant I go on at the end of this one.

Started my day with a DM asking me to do professional translation work for free because "I promise I'm a good person and I've always advocated for paying creatives."

Are you sure? Because that's literally the opposite of what you're doing right now by saying you can't pay me.

Reviewed another book courtesy of #NetGalley. Kind of hard to read near future speculative fiction that takes place in the United States right now, but this book was really good. I really enjoyed the calm chaos. Highly recommend.

It cannot be understated how important a good editor and proofreader are to ensuring project quality. But people in these roles who lack a strong attention to detail/can't articulate their issues, can bog a project down.

Your translators can't read minds. Be clear and articulate in your comments.

It's:
"人間の寿命は短いってわかっていたのに… なんでもっと知ろうと思わなかったんだろう"
Something like "I knew humans had short lives... Why didn't I get to know him better?"

This morning, translation involves carefully analyzing a drawing of a knee MRI to figure out if this character tore their ACL or their PCL since the injury name used in the text lacks that specificity (that is included in all references I've found), but the speaker is a doctor.
