After years of games (and movies, and TV shows) featuring reams of irony-poisoned dialogue, Lumines Arise's sense of really *meaning* what it "says" throughout is refreshing. And that, to me, is admirable.
These sorts of things are important and always have been, but this sort of earnest sincerity feels like it is increasingly rare to see in this irony-poisoned age in which we live. After all too many narrative-centric games that feature dialogue laced with sarcasm, insincerity and an unwillingness to display actual emotions without regarding them as somehow “cringe”, It’s honestly refreshing to enjoy an interactive work of art which has absolutely no shame about what it is saying. And, if you’re willing to let yourself be swept up in what Lumines Arise is doing, it’s genuinely affecting! One stage features a rainy night-time scene with dancing silhouettes and tiles that resemble the little green man on pedestrian crossings, while its lyrics run “Rain on a cloudy day won’t stay / You and I deserve to live this life / We will get through every fight” — and it’s incredibly memorable. (It’s also quite a difficult stage, so once you do get through that particular “fight”, you really feel like you’ve earned it.) Your first reaction to all that might be “blergh”, but there’s also absolutely no shame in thinking “yes, you and I do deserve to live this life, and it would be nice if we could get through every fight, particularly given how shit life has been of late”. And nor should there be any shame in that! Modern culture — and particularly Internet culture — has taught many of us to repress our emotions, that expressing ourselves is “cringe”, and we really need to get over that, because it’s not healthy.

Lumines Arise isn't "about" something specific in the same way a story-based game is, but it definitely has recurring themes, and one of the best things about it is that it has no shame about expressing those themes.
Where Lumines Arise excels, like Tetris Effect before it, is in its artistic intent. This is a game that has been designed to not just be mechanically elegant, but emotionally resonant, too. Each musical track that accompanies a skin has clearly been designed to elicit a particular feeling in the player, and many of them even have lyrics to emphasise the tone they are going for. The particularly cynical — especially those who have been breathing Internet fumes for too long — may well witness some of Lumines Arise‘s scenes and think they are somehow “corny” or “cringe”. Because one thing you can absolutely say about Lumines Arise is that it is a completely earnest work of art. Each stage has been crafted with clear artistic, authorial intent, despite there being no explicit narrative that runs through the game. And many of these stages are about positive affirmations like never giving up, overcoming challenges, finding community and drawing comfort from others.

These look great! The house interior shots remind me a lot of the background art of the original Alone in the Dark in terms of colour scheme, lighting and suchlike.
