Really interesting on how Mamdani is trying to succeed where Obama failed, in converting a mass grassroots movement into one that can help you govern by staying in touch with people and having them shape policy, having the numbers to win political battles, and being a campaigning government.
Mamdani's bold experiment
NYC's mayor seems to be trying to achieve what Barack Obama never could: turning his campaign movement into a de facto arm of his government.

Reminder that in the UK an incoming radical, populist government would have immediate access to immense, unchecked executive power.

And the current government is doing nothing to protect us from that.
NEW

The UK constitution is even more vulnerable than the US constitution

In the face of an illiberal radical assault, what has happened politically in America could easily happen in the UK

That means their forces doing this instead of doing something better. It means they are having to plan to do this instead of doing something else. It means them thinking through scenarios where the US is an enemy, instead of thinking through scenarios where the US is an ally. These are costs *now*.

It’s really quite revealing that the first application of digital ID that this government came up with was immigration enforcement. It shows their thinking processes. It wasn’t the benefits for the users, the convenience, the efficiency, but the authoritarian use that mattered to them first.

Utterly damning report from Office for Environmental Protection - the Govt’s not only missing its targets to protect wildlife in England, it’s also failing on *almost all* environmental measures - and in some cases actively destroying the natural world through its obsession with growth at all costs

100% this 🥂

Also worth remembering that, since time immemorial, fostering a sense of helplessness has been a standard weapon in the armoury of repression. Embracing good humour, goodwill, and positive action to help one's community is a most effective and enjoyable way to fight back.
I know "nothing ever changes" is part psychological defence and part easiest hedge bet, because it is so often true, but people should think before sharing their "everything will always be awful" take. First, it adds to collective depression, but also it becomes a personally disempowering mantra.

Trump has been pretty clear all year that he views military and economic might as the only important geopolitical factor. If he can, and he wants to, he will.

This is all happening in plain sight, and if we refuse to believe our eyes we only have ourselves to blame. 10/11

For the past few months, I’ve been trying to get off US tech and I put together a guide so you find alternatives too. I hope you find it helpful!

Trump isn’t predictable or consistent, but this particular action *would* be consistent with the emergence of a G2+1 order where Washington and Beijing, with Moscow as a junior partner, give each other free rein in their purported spheres of influence.
