Cities are you listening?
Many city halls are deep in budget-time. Some are pushing austerity ideologies, and are ignoring the difference between costs and cost-savers/value creators. Citizens, PAY ATTENTION, and never forget that the TRUTH about a city’s REAL aspirations isn’t found in its visions. It’s found in its budget.

It’s awesome to see this — but seriously, it’s so damn frustrating that we have to fight this fight in every city when the science couldn’t be clearer. Get the cars out, make more money for local shops, and build cities that are exciting, healthy, and happy for everyone.
It’s really important that #Vancouver’s Downtown Business Association, who were originally against bike-lanes, are now among their most vigourous supporters, because of ACTUAL EVIDENCE that they’re better for downtown business than any street parking they replaced.

Safe bike-lanes mean business.

Most people don’t know that with SNAP you are banned from buying “foods that are hot at the point of sale”. So even if you have SNAP (which people don’t now) you can’t get cooked food. Which means you need to also actually have the resources to PREPARE a “healthy” meal.
Thinking about the social stigma against eating fast food in a country where poor people are being starved by the govt, the cost of groceries and fresh vegetables are astronomical, and a cheeseburger at McDonald’s costs $3.50.

“Clean” and “healthy” eating rhetoric is racist, ableist, and classist.

"Zohran Mamdani will be the first mayor of New York City in decades not to own a car"

Will be exciting to see if he can implement his vision to pedestrianize areas in the congestion pricing zone and dedicate entire streets as combo busways + active transportation
How Mamdani could push a bold redesign of New York's streets
The mayor-elect has articulated a vision for reshaping the city streets. Janette Sadik-Khan, the former commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation under the Bloomberg Administratio...

Remember DNC, it doesn't matter who you run, Fox news will call them a socialist. You could endorse the corpse of Ronald Reagan and their first segment would be "Extreme socialist Reagan picked by Soros to destroy America"

Stop caring what fox news says, and listen to your base. It clearly works.

Remember how it took like a decade to open Portage and Main? And lots of people were mad and scared about all the potential terrible consequences? And then....it has been totally fine. And no one is mad or even cares anymore. So yeah...build the damn bike lanes and let's get on with our lives.

Regarding Prime Minister Carney’s federal budget: I don’t pretend to fully know it, and there are elements that concern me, but if I were the NDP I’d pledge to support it if a significant investment in urban public transit (nation-building, climate etc) was added, and if I were PM Carney I’d agree.

Anyway, the NYT is by any measure an "elite" institution in the power centers of New York City... and it'd be good if the Times covered it that way, along with noting its very successful business model. bsky.app/profile/bgru...
This NYT story about how Mamdani dealt with the opposition by the city's elites fails to mention one particular elite institution: The NYT editorial page, which last June railed against him as "uniquely unsuited to the city’s challenges... lacks political savvy"

A typical European car is parked 92% of the time. It spends 1/5th of its driving time looking for parking. Its 5 seats only move 1.5 people. 86% of its fuel never reaches the wheels, and most of the energy that does, moves the car, not the people.

Sound efficient?
