Just published to the #metroscapes website: I have broken down the ownership / access to 223 kilometres of riverbanks for five major waterways in Niagara Region: the Welland Canal, Welland River, Twelve Mile Creek, Chippawa-Queenston Power Canal and the Niagara River.

I was trying to get a bit more history on Niagara's Millennium Trail, and believe it or not, the local municipality produced a YouTube video to break it down.

This seems to have been adopted by City Council but it's unclear what exactly that means, or when / how it happened. Does anyone know? @graphicmatt.com?

Yeah, it's the rent.

Between 2019-2024, retail rents in Toronto spiked by 142%.

Holyday now has a picture of a local strip mall. He says these businesses can barely survive on a busy street, so he doesn't believe this notion that any "lovely stores" will survive on local streets.

Zany is what makes life somewhat fucking interesting.
Councillor Holyday worries about retail stores that "sell some zany thing that has very little value." He wants to know if council could define a list of what stores can sell.

Staff say they can regulate things like size, noise and property standards, but generally not what stores sell.

Excellent piece by @isaaccallan.bsky.social and @colindmello.bsky.social about how difficult it was tunneling *perpendicular* under the 401. I believe it was tricky doing the same for the Kitchener Line / UP Express tunnel as well. A parallel tunnel to expand the 401 would be insane.

Since early 2023, a tunnel boring machine has been slowly making its way south from Sheppard Avenue and McCowan Road, digging out a route for the Scarborough Subway Extension.

The sun had been super active. Three X-class flares have shot towards the Earth in the last 72 hours. The latest is an X-5.1, one of the strongest in this solar cycle. One last shoutout. Toronto City Council will consider appealing this OLT decision this week, a development which could unravel the property fabric extending into the East Don Valley and open trail and wildlife access to 16 hectares of land. Please tell your councillor not to appeal this. #TOpoli
I am reading an OLT decision from last week for 155 St. Dennis Drive and geez, I'm shaking my head.

High density form, proximate to rapid transit and 95% of the land dedicated as parkland in the Don Valley. Seems like huge wins all around.

Why did the City of Toronto bother to fight this?!

I think Ryan Hall is a bit underappreciated. Yeah, he lures you in with some of his graphics nowadays, but he usually smacks you on the head with some realism about uncertainty. Plus this video leans on solid historical analysis. That's good content. I just wish we had a Canadian equivalent.

My dad was in a Toronto hospital 30 kilometres away, with a window pointing towards the accident site. The fireball lit his room up in red-orange light. My grandpop picked him up earlier than scheduled the next morning, likely out of caution and for contingency planning.
46 years ago I woke up to massive explosions and a tower of fire 2 miles away. My Dad thought the Russians had attacked.

A train derailment and exploded tanker cars created a cloud of chlorine gas over the city, so we evacuated with 250,000 other Mississaugans.
