What might it feel like to reach a state where your body’s density perfectly matches your surroundings? Their buoyant bodies are filled with ammonium chloride, which is lighter than seawater, helping them to conserve energy while traveling. 1,729 m #ArgentinianDeepSeeps

I had to take a German test recently, the studying for which brought me to tears multiple times because I was unavoidably confronted with the fact that my German has largely been *acquired* and not *learned*

As a linguist, this is my ideal approach to language. As an immigrant, it was damaging.

Take a second and think before posting the easy Eeyore reply. You might have something substantive to say instead. Or, even better, you can say nothing at all.

If you are anxious and sad about the state of the world, that's fine, and there are plenty of strategies for dealing with that. But I think you already know that drive-by online dooming isn't a strategy. It's selfish and adolescent. It's a contagion that only spreads the worst of you, not the best.

If you’re a person that celebrates Epiphany, remember that the magi engaged in righteous civil disobedience when they took another road home and didn’t snitch to Herod. The lesson is that the right thing is often the opposite of what elected leaders want you to do.

Someone told me that being my friend was ‘really postmodern’ (I have to choose to read this one as a compliment, which, res ipsa etc etc)
Forget insults, what’s the most unhinged *compliment* you’ve ever received?

This year I saw someone brand themselves online as a ‘former Professor of English’ and it turns out they were a TESOL adjunct at a community college for one semester.

I can’t exactly explain it, but this is the vibe I want to bring in 2026.

This volume provides cutting-edge research on a wide range of questions in linguistics research, centred on Australian Indigenous languages. Written by world-leading experts, the chapters take a fresh look at current questions in each topic, inspired by the work of Australian linguist Jane Simpson.

Today my 5yo asked me if there was such a thing as grape JUICE and I nearly fell out of my chair. Imagine an American 5yo not knowing that grape juice exists 😂

Anyone want to see my German vowel space (ish) instead of scrolling for a second? GOOSE fronting will not be denied in any language!!!
December 4, 2025 at 1:39 PM
My cue to quit scrolling and do things that matter to me, thanks ❤️
The most precious commodity you have is your attention. You don’t have to waste it on poor-faith debates or arguments with strangers if you don’t think they’ll be productive. You can prioritize the things that matter to you and make your life richer.

I am so proud of this weird little paper. I have been collecting sources on the languages of Timor-Leste for over a decade, and this paper gave me a chance to compile them and give a general overview of the state of TL language documentation

I cannot recommend you enough to install the Wikipedia app on your devices and use it like you would any search engine. Nowadays they even have tabs so you can open many articles at once.

And, if you can, please donate to the foundation. It has survived the internet enshittification that way.
