What fun, weird features would you include on a print map of a town? Tree types? Real local-knowledge landmarks? Commercial property owner names? Visually name local businesses? Sledding hills?

Okay, folks. I’ve been asked by a lot of friends who aren’t following the AI discourse to sort of clarify what the main camps are arguing, how they approach the issues, etc. As a thoughtful observer, I’m happy to provide this orienting service. No questions or comments, please. Hope it helps!

THREAD: Just about every one of us has a bottle of generic medication somewhere in our house. But how much do we know about who made those drugs, and how?

The @fda.gov has made it difficult to find any of those details. 1/

I’ve been working on a new chapter for my upcoming DuckDB book (duckdb.gishub.org), focusing on large-scale geospatial analytics. As part of the chapter, I generated an H3 heatmap of 2.5 billion global building footprints from Overture Maps.

Stay tuned for the book release!

Tariffs are bad, but I'd have more sympathy for US transit agencies if they weren't inflating the costs of new buses by customizing absolutely everything (and fighting against efforts to lower costs by standardizing designs).
North American bus manufacturers, transit associations brace for new 10% bus tariff
Without relief mechanisms, transit agencies could lose buying power and have to delay climate-driven purchases.

Impossible! Ann Arbor is a special place. No lessons from other cities apply here. We have to invent everything from scratch with a process that takes a minimum of 20 years and involves at least a dozen postcards sent registered mail to each homeowner (but no renters, please) #a2council
Similar stuff happening in Cambridge 🙄

@aadl.org is the leaner New shelf downtown because people cleaned out the books (yay!), or has the Baker and Taylor closure hit home?

📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).

It’s also concerning. 1/
PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.
