update, this good worked out perfectly and i couldn't be happier
since i made sure to prioritise compatibility with a simple h264 encode, only one language and no subtitles
my moms tv is perfectly happy playing this back without any fiddling directly from the usb

FINALLY, all 107 episodes of that show ripped from dvd
(yea, my math was off/ i didnt realise the seasons didnt all have the same episode count)
time to reduce those file sizes,
based on tests 1.7gb ep's should go down to about 400mb
which is good enough for me
lets hope pc wont burn down
