I've seen this book on way too many colleagues' bookshelves. That already bothered me a bit, but I was not prepared for the epic volume of manifest bullshit is in here. Hope it was worth the migraine @michaelhobbes.bsky.social @notalawyer.bsky.social open.spotify.com/episode/1IeS...

Finally got around to watching Frankenstein and... It's not really good, actually? Like, Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi are a fine tandem but every other character is a cardboard cutout. Tonally the film is all over the place, the dialogue is choppy and the CGI is just garbage.

The story is not just about SocDem losses, but Green/Red alliance gains. Voters recognized the rightward shift and stuck with their principles. Very different from how the narrative is often presented.

Snowball's chance in hell this gets taken for the warning that it is, but one may hope. Ceding ground to the far right *never* works out. You don't become electorally attractive, you just legitimize their points - and they will always go further than you.
The Danish Social Democrats who have pursued far right policies on immigration and governs with the centre-right are set to lose in Copenhagen for the first time in a 100 years, while the left looks set to win a major victory today.

This callous shit coming from a *Labour* government. What the mass psychosis?!
BBC News: "the government believe refugees are deliberately bringing their children to avoid deportation"

As opposed to doing what with their children??

Normalize indicating where authors can cut words. I was just second reviewer for a chapter where my colleague did this (in a very nice way): show where an author could lose some detail, to make space for it elsewhere.

Lekker gewerkt van CDA en VVD in het Europees Parlement: voor het eerst samengewerkt met de PVV, AfD, Le Pen en Orbán om de Europese wegkijkwet slopen.

The U-turn that Von de Leyen took here would be illegal if executed on the Autobahn. Absolutely shameful.
A huge blow for people & the planet.

Today, @europarl.europa.eu voted in favour of deregulating corporations.

This backsliding will have devastating consequences for workers & the climate.

This betrays the whole project. This is not about fairness in sports or whatever facile excuse they come up with. It's not even just about marginalizing trans folks (although that is a big part). It's all about enforcing notions of femininity. And it's not just going to hurt trans women.
Nothing illustrates the arseholery of the IOC and the British Press more than the use of the image of a not-Trans woman to illustrate a story about trans women being banned (because there are no current trans women competing at this level)

I blame a lot of this on the US never really adopting any kind of human rights framework, and getting more familiar with the idea of balancing conflicting rights.
the thing the free speech warriors refuse to acknowledge is that all rights have to be considered in the context of other rights.

so, yes, they support the rights of bigots to be bigots out loud, but what about the “individual rights” of the people bullied? why don’t those rights matter?
Notable that FIRE (@thefireorg.bsky.social) filed an amicus in support of bullying trans youth. This is why trans people don't trust your transphobic organization, @aricohn.com.

Seeing them live at Høstsabbat made me realize how much I love Yob. Few bands can capture the cycle of melancholy and resignation as well as they do. As if you're walking through an ancient, weathered monument in song form: open.spotify.com/track/5T9iXq...

Dick Cheney being framed as opposed to Trump is evidence that even the most wafer-thin civility is valued more than actual commitment to democracy and rule of law. It does not matter that you wipe the floor with the separation of powers, as long as you pretend convincingly enough.

It's a particular kind of shitty when your cat is hurt and you're abroad. We have an amazing cat sitter and good friends that can take care of it, but I'm still fighting the urge to drive home straight away.

If that was the case, teachers would have been made obsolete by the invention of "books"
Professors *never* supply information. Students aren’t paying premium prices for ‘information’ at all. How can people who presumably have attended universities misunderstand their role so badly?
Wow. Just wow.

"Students pay premium prices for information that AI now delivers instantly and for free. A business student can ask ChatGPT to explain supply chain optimization or generate market analysis in seconds. The traditional lecture-and-test model faces its Blockbuster moment."

And neither should it. It's not like the Dayton accords precluded the existence of the ICTY, or the Bosnian Genocide case. No peace without accountability.
