These people are genuinely tempting me to turn into a crank. I’m ready to be outside yelling with signs that say “Jesus never knew you” and “you’re going to burn in everlasting fire”, and I don’t even believe in hell like that.

There’s been a live debate over this for a long time. I think Susan Sontag had it right: “One can feel obliged to look at photographs that record great cruelties and crimes. (cont.)
Don’t watch a video of someone dying.

This is why it annoys me when people try to make it seem as if this is how things have always been. There was a time when greater literacy and reading as a part of everyday life for people of every class was a national mission. Then it changed drastically and now we’re here.
Last fall I ended up looking at a lot of Seventeen magazines for a project. Even in the late 90's, there was a section of book recs in every issue. One of them was historical fiction about the life of Van Gogh, doorstop-thick. It hit me then how much of a reading culture we've lost.

Okay, I worked an hour and a half. Is that enough yet?

I hate the first Monday in January.

Sending my stupid correspondence to friggen John Fetterman, even if he's a turd who will either reply sassily or not at all, because you gotta. Write to your representatives everybody. Even if they're like, total turds. We gotta.

It's an old and obvious pattern. An unpopular president - failing on the economy and losing his grip on power at home - decides to launch a war for regime change abroad.

The American people don’t want to “run” a foreign country while our leaders fail to improve life in this one.

Contact your congresspeople! I just emailed, which took about 5-10 minutes. Do that via their webpages, which you can find here: www.congress.gov/members/find...

Or you can call them at www.5calls.org.

Don’t worry too much about exactly what to say. They usually just count the number for/against.

The worst part is that it’s my understanding every “apology” has even been people prompting it to apologize. It would still be idiotic to pretend like Grok had the self-awareness to apologize but it’s not even creating the apology unprompted.
A real news outlet publishing the phrase "Grok apologized" should result in like a week-long timeout. Think about what you've done.

A journal made a proof of my manuscript before peer review? Then asked me to edit that version rather than mine? But screwed up the citations in the proof? And co-authors added new citations to the screwed up ones? And now I have to fix them? And the journal wants the paper back on the 1st?

This seems… uh… very bad to me.

There are skills involved in reading entire books that you can’t practice by only reading excerpts: skills around attention, memory, and synthesizing large amounts of information.
You'll see this article posted a lot today. That's only because everyone should read it. www.nytimes.com/2025/12/12/u...

It’s probably bad that I feel dead certain we’re going to get scored on every time we pull our goalie, and then get proven right.
