i don't think this is even a real statistical anomaly anymore. it seems like there's someone in the crowd at every mass shooting who has been through it before. this doesn't have to be our shared cultural experience.

Poverty is a policy choice. Concentrated wealth is a policy choice. Inequality is a policy choice. None of it is natural or inevitable. Remember: We have the power to build a system that serves the many, not the powerful few.

Ahmed al-Ahmed, the man who disarmed one of the shooters at Bondi Beach in Sydney today, is a Syrian Muslim.

He's in hospital, right now. He's a braver man than most I think would be in his situation.

He's the spirit of Chanukkah -- he keeps the lamps of hope burning. That's for remembrance.

About the horror on Bondi Beach in Australia: one detail moves me deeply. The "hero" - the only person to risk his life by disarming one of the shooters (and who was shot twice himself) - is a Muslim. A Muslim saving Jews is a good message.

ironically the attack in bondi beach made this chanukah worth celebrating, not as a triumphant military victory, but as a celebration of light over darkness
"This year especially it will be hard for many American Jews to celebrate Hanukkah as a holiday glorifying a Jewish military victory. So many of us have come to see that militarism will not guarantee peace for the people of Israel, but rather only contribute to a cycle of endless war."
Liberal-thinking Jews like me need a new way to think about Hanukkah - Jewish Telegraphic Agency
The author of a new prayer book for non-theistic Jews imagines a holiday that doesn't celebrate military might or the supernatural.

Exactly.
Bondi Beach. Australia. A mass shooting where this is almost unheard of.

Trump’s return and his constant promotion of violence don’t stay contained to the U.S.

His rhetoric travels. Extremists listen. Copycats follow.

He doesn’t pull triggers — he raises the temperature.
